“Our week-long schedule of All-Star events and activities is intended to be a global celebration of basketball, our league, and the values for which we stand, and to bring together all members of the NBA community – current and former players, league and team officials, business partners, and fans. While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2."
How much money is NC losing as a result of losing this, I wonder?
Adam Silver had the courage to make a stand, and that’s commendable. But the NBA *does *have a franchise in North Carolina. They can’t just turn their back on the Hornets, who just hosted NBA playoff games and will host at least 41 more games next season. But Charlotte can host in 2019 “provided there is an appropriate resolution to this matter.”
Wrong sport man, I do believe the correct term is “kicked a game winning field goal!”
I don’t really like basketball, but good on the NBA for this, they might not be able to do something about the local team, but the All-Star game is theirs to do as they please.
As much as i favor LGBT rights and despise this law we should at least consider the fact that the reason this law exists in the first place was because Charlotte (the city the team represents and the arena where the game was going to take place) passed an ANTI discrimination law. This is mostly screwing the people who fought on the right side of the issue.
It sucks that Charlotte is taking a hit on this. But if the entire state is a toxic environment, then the NBA is right to pull out of it. Because the NBA would be bringing players, former players, players’ families, fans, and other employees/personnel into a hostile environment, even if that city is something of an oasis. The LGBT (especially T) would be in that hostile environment in order to attend an NBA event. Good for the NBA for trying to work it out in the first place, good for Charlotte for not being assholes in the first place, and the blame lands squarely on the state itself for refusing to work something out.
The hostile environment argument doesn’t really hold water when the NBA brought players and families, etc, etc to Charlotte for playoff games a couple month ago and plans to do the same for 41 more home games this season. They pulled the All Star game to make a statement, not because of concerns of a hostile environment. And that’s fine, by the way.
