Today, I had the TV on NC PBS, puttin’ away the holiday decorations. The usual fave garden shows were pre-empted to the Governor’s Inauguration, broadcast live. OK, so I watched, while wrapping up my lovely collection of elves.
And, glad I did. I knew we in NC had done well by our elections, but to see the ceremony really brought it home how much the face of politics has been changed.
NC has elected our first female Governor, Bev Purdue. In addition, five of the nine additional top state elected officials are women. Incredible! The inauguration ceremony was presided over by an African-American woman, the invocation given by an African-American Bishop, and the elected were sworn in by the NC Supreme Court Justices— 3 of the 7 women, one African American, the Chief Justice a woman.
Watching the ceremony really moved me. It was obvious that so many in the crowd had brought their daughters to see history being made, to give them high hopes of achievement Yay for our Southern state for forging ahead with inclusive leadership!
Any other states with similar sea changes?
