I’d like to buy a laptop, but only for gaming, (Casino, Solitaire, etc.) I wouldn’t ever need to take it on a trip and when I’m at work I can access my e-mail through the work PC. (They won’t allow me to run games on the work computer)
I know that as a genereal rule Laps are expensive, but how much do y’all think I could expect to pay for a used one, with just the CD-ROM?
I don’t think it’s a good idea if your company wouldn’t let you putting games on the PCs. It seems that they have something against playing games and you’re trying to circumvent it.
Getting a laptop solely for playing games, especially things like solitaire, is a complete waste of money and resources. This is compounded by the facts that you say you won’t ever take it anywhere and you would be using it for something that you aren’t supposed to be using it for.
Seriously, if you are about to blow 2000 bucks on a new laptop to play SOLITAIRE for God’s sake, would you please send me the money instead? I could really use that… and I’ll even teach you how to play solitaire without a computer.
Get a used 486 desktop for next to nothing at a garage sale. Take it to work and stick it on the floor behind your desk. Get one of those keyboard/monitor switches so you can use your solitaire mahine and your work machine on the same monitor/keyboard. Mount the switch on the bottom of your desk and practice switching it qucikly when you hear people coming in.
Disclaimer: If you get fired for this its your fault and I will laugh at you.
I’m not gonna spend 2K bucks on a lappy, okay? More like 200 bucks. Remember I said I wanted a used one.
My company has absolutely nothing against us using our own computers for any purpose. They just don’t want us installing any of our own programs on their units.
Sometimes, we have nothing going on in the middle of the night and some of us read, some of surf the web, and some of us play either hand-held or computer games…
A good 166 notebook that can run Win 95/98 is around 150-200 on Ebay. You need to take your time and shop around and stick with major brands so that needed parts after the fact is not a problem. You can get 486 notebooks for less than $ 100.00 but functionality speedwise with all popular games might be an issue although I do have a little 486-33 IBM 12Meg mem 750 meg HD color Thinkpad gathering dust that did fine with 95 (and IE under 95!) until the BIOS battery died (haven’t bothered to replace it) and it just boots to the setup screen.
There’s tons of them on Ebay. Just look around. I would stick with IBM, Toshiba and Compaq per the spare parts reason. It’s easier to get at the drives on Toshibas and Compaqs. There are a lot of units without CD’s or where the CD’s have died that sell very inexpensively. If you can get a 10. 2.5. to 3.5 drive adapter you can bypass the need for a CD to install the OS by slaving the 2.5 drive to to a desktop temporarily for file transfer of the OS binaries and then after you re-install the 2.5 boot and configure the OS, and then just get a PCMCIA network adapter for
15.00 - $ 20.00 on Ebay and via your home network you can attach it (via mapping the desktop CD to it) to any desktop you wish. Assuming no CD if your OS version is an “upgrade” you will also need to copy the Win 98 or 95 binaries to a directory on the disk so that Windows ME or 98 or 95 can see that you have the previous version. If you have a floppy based version just use that.
Another great thing about a Palm or other PDA is that you can use them anywhere - on the subway, while waiting in a queue, in a boring meeting, etc. There are very good games available for the Palm. I’d say a Palm IIIc or Visor Prism would be a good choice - they have color displays and should be very affordable. I just checked eBay and the Palm IIIc seems to be selling for under $40.
A PDA does need a host PC to connect to in order to download software. I presume you have a PC at home you can use for this purpose. If not, forget PDAs and go for a laptop.
Sorry, I think I was wrong about the eBay price of the Palm IIIc - I guess fully functional ones are more like $150? (Sorry, I’m not very used to eBay)
