As an obsessive movie geek–I watch roughly a grand of movies a year, and when I write it’s usually about movies–I join a lot of film discussion groups. It’s been my experience that even if they start out decent, eventually they get overtaken by Edgy™ fanboys who overwhelm the group with threads like “Who is the greatest director of all time and why is it Zack Snyder?” or push people out of a thread about Dreyer or Tarkovsky by ridiculing anyone who wants to treat movies as just as serious an art form as painting or literature. I’m not a snob–I love MCU, Snyder, Bay movies, and will continue to participate in such groups–but I find it very difficult to discuss anything else without the blockbusters-only gang barrelling in and kicking sand in faces.
Yes, I’m admitting to need a safe space; there are a million other places to rank Adam Sandler movies in.
How do I convey that in a group name?
Serious Film Discussion–pretty dry
Safe Space for Cinéastes–intended as ironically snooty, but a lot of people may not get that
Any brainstormers with nothing better to do help me come up with the right approach?
