Need a new FPS Recommendation

I’ve only heard one person have anything good to say about Rage, everyone else is utterly disgusted by it, especially previous id fans.

More generally, I would never recommend buying a game for more than 1/3rd of its normal price, especially not full priced $60 games. You haven’t been around for a while so you may not have realized how much the market has changed for PC gaming. Everything is digital - no one buys retail copies of anything. And with digital comes low distribution costs. When games are first launched, they have contractual obligations to price them the same as a retail copy of the game, but that pretty quickly goes away, and you can get a game you want for half price or less fairly quickly after launch.

Or, rather than target particular games, just grab anything that seems interesting to you that’s 75%+ off. You’ll quickly build up a queue of games to play that you’ll be busy until the new games you want are $5 anyway. The black friday and Christmas sales will be good for this - you can pick up a ton of good games you’ve missed over the years for cheap. Bioshock, Fallout 3, Crysis, Dragon Age, Just Cause 2, etc will be $5 or less. And usually indie games that you probably haven’t heard of but some of which are great for $2.

The only time I even consider buying new games is when I’m completely sure I’ll like it, and it’s predominantly multiplayer. Either the game will have a small community and I want to be sure to play multiplayer before the community dies off (although the community tends to get revived by sales) or it’s going to be a game I play the hell out of and I don’t want to fall behind and start late. But I buy probably not even 2 games a year at full price.

For single player games, there’s no reason to rush - not only will the games get better by the time you get around to playing them because of patching and mods available, but they’ll also be 1/10th the price. And it’s not like you’ll ever get bored and need a new game - you’ll have a ton of great games you haven’t even touched. I have like 400 games on steam alone so I’ll never run out of stuff to do - and that sounds like a lot, except I spend way less than someone who buys 1 new console game ever month.

Concur. I bought Brink on launch day at full price based on the hype and trailers. I’ve made worse financial decisions, but not many. Worth $10, but no more than that.

Yeah, I have been doing the digital download thing for a few years, but I still buy some games at release if it is something I really want.

As far as weapon effectiveness and ammo in Metro. Well, if you had guns that could ace anything in one shot and unlimited ammo, it just wouldn’t be the same.

I have been genuinely scared a few times by appearing enemies (not pop out, just from flash light and terrain) and just the dark/heavy-weighted atmosphere.

Not to mention that damned gas mask. I feel like I am struggling for air, and if you get low on filters while doing a top side lvl…wow, it gets really pressured.

Very well done, in that aspect.

As far as weapons, I am currently sporting a silenced/scoped/stocked pistol a scoped VSV and an auto shotgun (6 rounds) with bayonet.

Only thing that can get me is surprise mutants/creatures and swarms of Nazis. Working on Dark Station right now.

Just a great game, IMHO.

Need to actually take breaks while playing, as it causes me some minor stress. That’s well done.

I got Brink on the day-after-launch day and I definitely got my $40’s value out of it. For a multiplayer game, getting in at release is usually worth it. Most games will never again hit their release activity peak, you get to see everyone getting a handle on the new gameplay and it’s generally a lot of fun. Were you to pick up Brink now, you’d not get nearly as much out of its multiplayer anymore, because so many players have moved on to the next bright & shiny thing…including me - Red Orchestra 2 is pretty good.

I came here late and was gonna recommend STALKER:CoS but I see you’ve already picked it up and started. Brilliant game, tons of atmosphere, and some parts that are scary as hell. And I was genuinely moved by the story, though I seem to be in a minority on that as I always hear people besmirching the plot. Me, I was really invested in The Marked One’s tale.

And if you enjoy Metro’s fear factor, in fact find yourself wanting something even more intense, then you must go for Amnesia. Gorgeous, creepy to the point of terrifying, and unique game play. Also you can get it for a song these days.

I’m not sure what the zeitgeist here on the Dope is for Far Cry 2, but I loved it. Another evocative game world that shows both the beauty and squalor in a poor African country. Plus some very cool weapons, my favorite being the crossbow that shoots flaming arrows. The delight I developed for causing fires in the dry grasslands worries me. It’s actually the first game I played where my ‘character’ is pretty much a violent mercenary scumbag with few if any redeeming qualities. Took me a while to realize that the choices I was making didn’t really have a moral basis to them, no matter how much I tried to avoid being a killer.

Similarly, you simply must try Just Cause 2, although that’s not really a FPS as your character is seen in 3rd person. It’s actually the first game with that perspective I’ve ever played, and it took me a while to get used to it, but it’s totally worth the learning curve. Holy cow is this a fun game, especially if you like wreaking total, crazy, ridiculous havoc. Escaping from an enemy who’s chasing you in a jeep? Use your grappling hook to attach said enemy to a nearby wall, then watch as he flies up like a puppet while the jeep explodes (thanks to a bullet you placed into one of the tires). It’s another game where your ethics are a bit wonky, but because the violence and 'splodey times are so over-the-top (not to mention some hilariously stereotyped voice acting) I found it easy to divorce my own moral core and just enjoy causing chaos, which actually earns you money. I’ve spent about 200 hours playing this game because I’m a crazed completist and I really really wanna get all the items and destroy everything that can possibly be destroyed. It’s also one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen in a game, with absolutely no loading screens throughout this massive world. Only when you’re killed and reload do you get a loading screen. Otherwise you can explore this tinpot island nation to the fullest without ever meeting up with invisible walls. Huge mountain in your way? Big deal, that’s why God gave you that grappling hook. Use it to Ccimb over the mountain, then base jump hundreds of feet before using your parachute. Truly one of the most fun games I’ve ever played… stupid, feel-like-you’re-in-a-Michael-Bay-movie fun.

Oh and it goes without saying if you enjoy a more cerebral, puzzley experience coupled with some of the best comedy writing and voice acting in videogame history, you must try the Portal games. Again, not exactly an FPS, since you’re not really “shooting” at your enemies, but they’re brilliant games and no one who likes smart humor and excellent performances should miss 'em.

Thanks choie. I have not done Farcry or Farcry 2, but if I see them cheap I will try them out. I have read about Amnesia and it intrigues me, but I have heard that it is down-right disturbing to some. I will probably try it also.

As far as Stalker: SoC, I am really in love with this game.

I was wondering about mods and especially Complete 2009(2012) if anyone has experience.

I read a lot of good stuff about it, but it also seems very technical and resolving any issues seems to be a lot of file editing work.

Does anyone have experience with that mod at all?

Just wondering if it is worth possible hassle for what seems to be a lot of eye candy and tweaks, but still the same game.
