I’ve only heard one person have anything good to say about Rage, everyone else is utterly disgusted by it, especially previous id fans.
More generally, I would never recommend buying a game for more than 1/3rd of its normal price, especially not full priced $60 games. You haven’t been around for a while so you may not have realized how much the market has changed for PC gaming. Everything is digital - no one buys retail copies of anything. And with digital comes low distribution costs. When games are first launched, they have contractual obligations to price them the same as a retail copy of the game, but that pretty quickly goes away, and you can get a game you want for half price or less fairly quickly after launch.
Or, rather than target particular games, just grab anything that seems interesting to you that’s 75%+ off. You’ll quickly build up a queue of games to play that you’ll be busy until the new games you want are $5 anyway. The black friday and Christmas sales will be good for this - you can pick up a ton of good games you’ve missed over the years for cheap. Bioshock, Fallout 3, Crysis, Dragon Age, Just Cause 2, etc will be $5 or less. And usually indie games that you probably haven’t heard of but some of which are great for $2.
The only time I even consider buying new games is when I’m completely sure I’ll like it, and it’s predominantly multiplayer. Either the game will have a small community and I want to be sure to play multiplayer before the community dies off (although the community tends to get revived by sales) or it’s going to be a game I play the hell out of and I don’t want to fall behind and start late. But I buy probably not even 2 games a year at full price.
For single player games, there’s no reason to rush - not only will the games get better by the time you get around to playing them because of patching and mods available, but they’ll also be 1/10th the price. And it’s not like you’ll ever get bored and need a new game - you’ll have a ton of great games you haven’t even touched. I have like 400 games on steam alone so I’ll never run out of stuff to do - and that sounds like a lot, except I spend way less than someone who buys 1 new console game ever month.
