Windows 7, and I’d like a game from 2004-present. I can’t run the top, top end games, but can run a lot.
I am not a fan of first person shooters, in general. I love Half-life 1 and 2 and think their single-player campaigns are amazing. Fun, varied, and just a great experience.
My top choice right now is F.E.A.R., but I don’t know if it is worth the $10 on Steam. I’ve heard good things about it, but I am not decided yet.
I’m not a big military-fan kind of guy, so probably not those Call of Duty games, though I know nothing about them.
Anyway, I’d appreciate your thoughts. I doesn’t have to be on Steam for me to buy, by the way. That is just my main way.
Indulge my curiosity here, but if you’re not generally a fan of the genre, why are you looking to buy a game in it?
That said, you might like Bioshock (2007) or maybe the more recent Bioshock Infinite. Don’t buy either on Steam right now though, since they’re priced at $20 and $60 respectively, whereas you can get the for like $5 and $30 on Amazon.
I generally don’t play FPS games, and like you my FPS enjoyment is mostly from Half-Life. Except Borderlands and Borderlands 2, the second is probably in my top 5 most played games. There’s just something about it that I love that no other FPS really does for me. It is a relatively recent game though, so I’m not sure if you’d be able to run it. The original is good, but definitely a much rougher game than BL 2.
Yeah, Bioshock is supposed to be great. I was going to recommend the various STALKER series, just because the setting is so weird, yet fun. I’m a masochist, so I like Operation: Flashpoint and all its progeny (Arma, etc…) but if you don’t like military shooters…(especially ones that are one-hit kill.)
Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are about as much fun as it’s possible to have on a computer with your clothes on. Then again, I absolutely loved the original Fallout and Fallout 2. If you want to go the FO route, play FO3 first. 'Cause New Vegas will absolutely spoil you.
I have Win7, yet only a GT 220 graphics card, so I feel your pain. Any of the games I’ve mentioned will probably run on your system easily.
Edit: Oh, all of them are a blast in single player, even the Armas. Though Arma’s single player campaign is buggy as hell and sucks, IMHO. If you want to do the multi-player thing, hard to go wrong with Red Orchestra.
The gameplay and scenery in F.E.A.R. is not varied. What it does well is the atmosphere, gunplay mechanics, and integration of the story into the game (but not as much story as half-life). A good game, but I’d guess not what you are after given your comments on half-life.
Damn it. I had every single game already mentioned ready for a recommendin’ and you guys ruined it!
I’m going to recommend Mass Effect - even though it’s a third person shooter. Great story and characters, and decent shooting action.
Also if you liked Half-Life 2 you might like Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2. Crysis 2 is less of a sandbox shooter and more of a linear experience. You might enjoy it as well.
It is. Great game though (SRTT, never played 2nd). The same bundle now comes with Metro 2033 if you beat the average price which was a solid FPS with a good story.
Too late to edit:
Far Cry 3 was a lot of fun for me. Open world, serviceable story with a few outstanding characters. Game play was sort of as varied as you made it – you could approach an enemy camp by sniping it at a distance, by running and and using mid-range weapons, by stealthily knifing everyone, but driving a truck with C4 strapped to the sides into the gate and rolling out before setting the detonator, etc. Plus you had things like hostile wildlife; nothing like setting up a sniper position on a cliff and getting ready to take out that first guard when a leopard creeps up from behind and jumps on your back.
If you liked the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, you should at least try the first Call of Duty and its expansion. The American campaign is based on the exploits of the 506th Airbonre.
Another vote for both FarCry 3 and Fallout 3… the former occupied at least a month worth of gaming time for me recently until my most recent class and new job both started at the same time, and the latter is still one of my top 5 gaming experiences. If you’ve never played it, the scene where you first exit Vault 101 is just SO amazing. Be aware, though, that Fallout 3 has some compatibility issues with Windows 7. I could never get my copy to work, even after trying multiple ideas from internet forums… it would always freeze up during the scene where your character is born and require a hard restart.
If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a new game that greatly intrigues me called Sir, You Are Being Hunted. It’s currently in closed alpha, but the alpha release is just a couple weeks away. I’ve been following the development for a little while, and you should really check out some gameplay footage on YouTube to see what it’s all about. It’s less a shooter and more a survival game, but it looks amazing.
Fallout 3 is incredible, though not at all a typical FPS in any way. It’s more of an RPG. You rarely if ever do any live-action shooting. Most of your combat should be in VATS mode where you are selecting ahead of time where you want to hit, and then the computer does it for you. But yes, certainly one of my favorite games, but I don’t really consider it an FPS.
Bioshock let me down, I thought 2 was an improvement, and I have yet to play much of Infinity (though I did like what I’ve played so far). I say give 'em a try, but don’t have your hopes up too high for them.
Any of the Deus-Ex games are great. More FPS than Fallout 3 but still pretty RPGish. Definitely try the newest one, Human Revolution, if you get a chance.
