I’m looking for help finding a new game to play. It doesn’t have to be brand new, but it should be able to work with Windows 10.
Games I love:
Half Life series
Mass Effect series
Doom (3 and 2016)
Games I liked:
Borderlands 2
GTA 5
Games I just couldn’t get into:
Witcher 3
Deus Ex Human Revolution
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
I think I like linear games best, but open world games like Borderlands, Mass Effect, and GTA can be a lot of fun, too. Completely open world like Witcher 3 just seem to overwhelm me. Plus, that game was just too much with the various things you had to collect, potions to make, and so on. Deus Ex had too much close fighting for me.
I tried Fallout 3 New Vegas, but I couldn’t get it running under Windows 10 (I actually got a credit from Steam – does that happen often?).
My computer and GPU are good enough to play GTA 5 and Doom on very high settings, so a newer game is OK. I’d rather save a bit of money and get something older – the STALKER games were cheap which worked out well because I really didn’t like them. And, I’m hoping I could use keyboard and mouse – I’m terrible with a controller.
Shadow Warrior 2 would probably work for you, it’s all about shooting demons in the face and collecting loot. As long as you can stomach the corny humour, but I guess if you like Borderlands 2 that won’t be too much of a problem.
Why did you not like Witcher 3? As a Borderlands aficionado getting weary of the franchise, I was looking at the fantabulous reviews and reports on W3 as an alternative. Was waiting for a price drop, though.
It’s very open-world, more than Borderlands, I think. There are all kinds of materials you have to collect or buy in order to upgrade your equipment, create spells, and probably do other things. I never really figured it all out. Then, I got to some area, fighting a werewolf, I think, and I just couldn’t get past it. I don’t think I was at a high enough level, or I hadn’t upgraded my equipment or spells or something. It was all very complicated for me and it never really clicked. It took me forever to figure out why I couldn’t shoot my crossbow – there was something not equipped or not assigned or something. There’s a lot of close fighting, which is not my favorite, too.
It gets great reviews and if you like that kind of game, it’s probably fantastic. It was all too complex for the level of attention I was willing to give it.
I think Gears of War 4 came out earlier this month, should be available on the Windows 10 app store thing if you have the anniversary update. I have no idea how good it is, but it should check your boxes.
There’s also the new Hitman, which technically qualifies but you shouldn’t really play it like a shooter. In any mission you ideally only kill one person so it’s more of a really in-depth stealth game.
Gears of War is getting good remarks from people I know but I’ve never played a GoW game to say much about it.
You didn’t list the Wolfenstein games (The New Order & The Old Blood) but I’d be surprised if you haven’t played them. If you haven’t though, they’d be right up your alley.
In the “open world FPS” genre you have the Far Cry games (3 & 4 mainly) and Homefront: the Revolution which tries to be urban Far Cry. The first Homefront was mainly a multiplayer game with a lame 4 hr linear campaign tacked on, Revolution is designed as a single player experience with some additional Co-Op maps (that I’ve had fun soloing).
Also (again, you may have played) the Metro games (2033 / Last Light) are on sale for $4.99 each or $7.99 for the bundle at the Humble Store – cheaper than Steam’s current sale price. Extremely linear shooter since you spend most of your time in subway tunnels. Can be played stealth or shoot 'em up.
If you’re only getting one, Last Light is probably the better standard shooter experience. 2033 is a good game and worth getting but is rather slow to get started because it tries to follow the book it’s based from.
These are great suggestions, thanks! I haven’t played a Wolfenstein game since the original one on the Apple ][ (“Halt!”) and then Wolf 3d. I remember the trailers for Return to CW, but I never tried it. I didn’t even realize they came out with new versions after that.
I’ve never hear of the Metro games – I’ll check out some trailers.
Gears of War may be too advanced for my machine – I have a good enough GPU (970), but my CPU is a i7-920. Also, for that price, I could probably try Fallout 4. My brother is playing GoW, but he only really talked about co-op modes. I’m hoping for single player.
Oh, if you loved Doom 2016, then W:TNO will be a hit with you. It’s not quite as chaotic as Doom but it very much embraces its shooter roots. “The Old Blood” is the stand-alone prequel and is pretty much The New Order with most of the plot stripped out and set ~20 years earlier. The first 30ish minutes is kind of slow but then it really gets into it.
Here’s a spoiler-free game play section from Metro: Last Light. Most of the official trailers are more about setting the mood than showing the game. It’s definitely slower paced and has survival aspects such as limited ammo and gas mask filters. Still for $7.50 for the both games, it’s worth a try and if you like linear shooters there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy it.
you could also go to GOG.com and get all the classic shooters you could ever want … although the Halloween weekend deal stinks this year they usually have list of 20-50 games on a sale ono the weekend usually 2-5 bucks a piece once in a while youll see some higher than that but its one of the newer indy games …
Seconding the new Wolfenstein games. Also if you liked the new Doom, then check out the old* Serious Sams* - same fast-paced shootey goodness. If you didn’t like Stalker, you probably won’t like the Metro games either - they’re not quite as harsh as Stalker(s), but they’re still slow-paced survival games rather than action-paced affairs.
You might want to check out the BioShocks (since you like Half-Life, which tells me you like story-driven shooters), SpecsOps:The Line (same reason, also it begs to be played at least once if you like shooters). An uncommon suggestion would be X-Com : The Bureau, which is pretty close to the first Mass Effect game IMO. Another rather unsung gem as far as 3rd person shooters would be Warhammer40k : Space Marine ; and Just Cause 2 and 3 are just plain explodey, if a bit samey, fun.
I flipping loved the first two Batman games (Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, IIRC). The third one I never finished, but the first two were great. The first one is relatively linear.
A stupid as hell game that is way more fun than it has any right to be: Just Cause 2 (I never played others in the series). It’s pretty much open-world, but the ridiculous shit you can get away with in the game world makes it worth a play.
While it does have a few survival aspects, Metro isn’t anywhere near as survival-oriented as Stalker. No food, bandages, medicine, radiation, weapon/armor degradation, carry weights, endurance, etc. It is slower paced and more story-oriented than your typical shooter though. Depends on if he disliked Stalker’s survival aspects and open world or if he disliked not getting enough gunplay.
Just Cause 2 is fun for random mayhem. I’d recommend it over JC3 just because I never heard people say that JC3 is really that much better to justify the extra cost.
Thanks for everyone for all the suggestions! I went with Wolfenstein: The New Order and I’m totally loving it. Pretty good story, fun shooting, great weapons. I’m playing on the second easiest level, but I probably need to up that (I love that they use the same levels as the original Wolf 3d – Don’t Hurt Me, Daddy!).
Regarding the Batman games, I think those work better with a controller. My son played all the way through Arkham Asylum, but I never really got into it. I don’t like all the sneaking around, although the few times that you sneak in W:TNO are pretty cool.
I’ll remember this thread and come back to it once I finish this one.
Yes and no. The basics of the game rely on three things : one button to attack, one button to parry, and the ability to quickly move the camera around to scan the battlescape and choose the hapless mook you’re going to punch in the mouth next. M&KB does fine with that much. There is of course a lot of added shenanigans on top of that baseline, but I shouldn’t think M&KB is that worse off - controller handles combat gadgets and special moves by button combinations, KB could do it all in a handful of individual keys, which you’d be free to pick and choose because mouse deals with every other basic action.
That said, I would agree that out-of-combat navigation is probably smoother on a controller, which does matter from Arkham City onwards.
So I am not the only person who enjoyed it! The reviews it got truly do not do it justice.
My recommendation is Hard Reset, a solid, good looking shooter that plays kind of like Serious Sam, you shoot lots and lots of robots as you proceed from one robot shooting arena to the next. Its a bit short but very satisfying.
I haven’t played that, but based on the wiki description they do sound similar. Humanity is in dire straights, you exclusively fight robots, the fights are chaotic with lots of stuff exploding. Some other pleasant parts aspects of the game - your weapons have one giant magazine so you don’t need to reload, there is an old school health bar instead of hiding in the corner to regenerate, and there are hardly any jumping puzzles. I enjoy modern shooters, but found this to be a pleasant pallet cleanser.
