Need a new Oasis. (Biodegradable floral foam?)

That green stuff that florists use to stick cut flowers into is called generically ‘floral foam’ but is more often better known as ‘Oasis’ the name of the company that makes it.

However, this phenolic foam is not biodegradable.

What can be used in its place that is biodegradable?

Why not contact a wholesale florist and just buy some Oasis? My buddy has it at his business by the palletload.

I can get all the Oasis I want. But I don’t want any, because Oasis is non-biodegradable.

Looking for a more environment friendly alternative to Oasis.

What do you need it for?

Floral arrangements.
[At first I thought that was a dumb question until I realized that Oasis is also used quite frequently in art projects.]
Peace.

You might simply use a small paperboard box and punch the flowerstems into the top and bottom of the box to position them. When you’re done, the paperboard can go in the compost pile.

Another thought is to use the kind of foam used in biogradeable packing peanuts, but that stuff is made from cornstarch and dissolves easily in water, so it won’t work with a wet flower arrangement. It might be good for dried flowers, though.

I wasn’t trying to soundstupid*…it’s just that biodegradable stuff is usually biodegradable because it breaks down in sun or water or both. If you were trying to do something neither water- nor sun-related I thought that we’d a better chance of finding a substitute.

If flower arranging is your goal I have a few options in mind.

  1. Straight styrofoam. Jam those stems in there and re-use the styrofoam later.

  2. That cardboardy egg-crate material. It’ll last for a BIT underwater. Use wimpy flowers.

  3. Permanent frogs. Think “bed of nails”.

*Hope springs eternal.
