Need a reco for high-end earbuds

Anybody have any recommendations for great earbuds? I’d like to use them for my iPod and PSP primarily.

Yes, I’ve seen this thread.. I’m looking for a reco for something that sounds great that isn’t made by Shure. I’ve had three pairs of their earbuds (progressing from merely expensive to very, very expensive) and I’m not happy with how they hold up. (The insulation around the wires tends to crack in cold weather.)

Anybody ever try the Ultimate Ears? (Warning: LGT waste of Flash)

I’ve had a pair of Etymotic ER4p’s for a while and use them on planes during cross-country flights. They sound great and are pretty comfortable. You can find them online for less than $200.

There is no such thing. Earbuds are inherently inferior to normal headphones, and you’re depriving yourself of the entire sonic picture. Get real headphones.

I bought Skull Candy earbuds because regular ones always fall out of my ear. I’ve used them all winter and wear them skiing and when I walk to the train, in temperatures ranging from freezing to -30C. Haven’t had an issue with them yet.

I have plenty of “real headphones.” I want earbuds because I need to be able to stick them in a pocket with my iPod. The Shures are actually quite good, sound-wise. It’s their durability I’m not fond of. I’m looking for something with similar sound quality, but better durability.

Another vote for Etymotic - I tried the ER-4P and was fairly impressed. Headroom claims they’re relatively a bit weak on the bass, but I’m not overly concerned with that with ear-canal 'phones :).
