Need advice - is Dead Until Dark a romance novel?

I found this book at the airport, sitting on a seat. I wasn’t liking the book I brought so I picked it up and started read, The book is Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.

Now, being a red blooded American Male, I am supposed to be revolted by romance novels…and I have a sneaking suspicion that Dead Until Dark is one of these. I kind of liked it…am I damned to hell? (i.e. is it a romance novel)?

Not only does it have romance, but it can suck you into THE SERIES – where there’s even more sex, romance and hotness, along with vamps, werewolves, and other assorted shifters. It’s Twilight for grownups.

I would say it plays with certain elements of the romance genre, but also breaks out of them. I’m a guy as well and I’m enjoying the audible.com readings of the series so far - I’m about an hour and a quarter until ‘living dead in Dallas’

And come on, as a red blooded American Male you’re allowed to like it because Anna Paquin is in it, right? (Yeah, I know, that’s an adaptation, but still, she’s a perfect Sookie)

It’s urban fantasy with romantic elements, which most novels written to appeal to women have; as the romances go they’re not as focal to the series as in many books.

You’re not the only guy to like the series (my dad likes both the books and “True Blood” for example), so don’t worry about it if you get hooked too.

It’s also a pretty solid mystery. It wasn’t a great mystery, it’s easy to work out whodunnit early. I’m an old guy, and I thought it wasn’t bad at all.

The second book is by far the weakest, just so you know. It picks up in the third book and stays strong for the rest that have been released thus far. Less than 2 weeks 'til book 9…

I’d like to know what guys think about book 4 since the favorite of a lot of female readers (well, not the ones who love Bill, but everyone else), myself included. I kind of hope they mush books 2 and 3 together for the second season of “True Blood” so we get to stuff from the 4th book all the sooner:D

A female friend of mine got me started reading them, and I’ve liked the ones I’ve read so far. Is book 4, Dead to the World, the one where

Sookie finds Eric naked by the road with no memory of who he is, and they have a passionate affair?

If it is, I did like it, although perhaps not quite as much as the others, as it is more of a romance than the previous three. And it did set up some rather interesting scenes in the later books.

FWIW, IME the Sookie Stackhouse books are shelved by bookstores as either “science fiction” or “mystery.”

Yep, that’s the one, but he actually was wearing jeans though nothing else. And am I ever glad I read it after the first season of the show aired, so I got a real good mental picture of what Eric looks like:D

The friend who introduced me to the novels didn’t like Eric in the TV show. I believe her complaint was that he didn’t look enough like a Norse god.

Ha. Does she know that he’s being courted to play Thor in the upcoming movie?

Ok…so I don’t have to be tooooo embarassed if I was seen reading it.
