Need advice on improving sound on my 2005 TV

I think you’re right. Great message/username pairing.

I took that to mean the volume on the TV itself, but I don’t know what SS stands for either.

My guess is “surround sound”. But who knows?

Since you started this thread, TCL announced a new lineup of TVs, which means that last year’s models are probably going to be on sale soon. I’m not sure how much lower than $130 they’ll go - maybe $110 (that was their Black Friday price)?

If the truth be told, it’s not the price that is holding me up. I can afford a very nice TV. It’s the logistics. The physical steps needed. [Don’t laugh… or DO laugh, if you must… But brace yourself for some whining.] Starting with getting the big box delivered by amazon or Best Buy or whoever. Or bringing it home in the car from Wal-Mart or the PX. Getting it in the house. I need one I can lift all by myself. Taking the unwieldy thing out of the box. Saving the box in the garage in case I have to return it. Taking down the old TV and figuring out what to do with it.* But don’t get rid of it immediately in case I don’t like the new one or there’s something wrong with it. Setting up the new one. Actually that last step is probably the easiest. And I do love setting up techie gadgets. When I understand.

So I’ll think about it. I might wind up talking myself into it.

*Often when I have some still-working appliance or the like to dispose of and I don’t feel like wrestling it into the car and taking it somewhere, I leave it on the curb in front of my house. Often, it is gone in an hour or so. I’ll put a note on it-- “works fine,” or “switch broken.” Did that with a microwave when I got a new one, same with a vacuum cleaner, a lamp.

The one I linked to is only 28" wide, and weighs 8.6 lbs.

But I hear you about keeping the box, etc. My wife loathes the box for our new TV - it’s ridiculously big, and I have no decent reason to keep it around. I keep saying "what if we move?!. She’s not buying it.

Wow. That’s the same size as my current one. I’m weakening… :innocent:

Dang, that puppy is cheap. I have enough amazon reward points that I could get it for free.

I guess a lot depends on just how elaborate a sound you want to create. My wife’s and I each have our own TV’s Hers is 2008 with very basic sound. We just bought a sound bar, I think it was under $200 taxes in and it improved the sound quality immensely. This is several years ago, so it’s probably less expensive now. However, she wasn’t looking for anything fancy at the time.

I don’t want anything fancy. Just not scratchy.

From my OP:

“SS” = stereo system

Early on, I said I didn’t have a stereo system.

^ I_Love_Me_Vol.I asked what “SS” (from post #2) meant and I just wanted to clear the air (nothing to do with Nazis).

Hehe. Can’t be too careful these days!

I had to get a new TV a couple months ago when the picture stopped working on mine. It is a 40 inch and I had planned on upgrading to a 50 when the time came. I was pretty sure I couldn’t wrangle one that big so I got a 43. I picked it up curbside at Best Buy and got it in the house without any problems. Swapping the two was a little tricky but not nearly as difficult as I had envisioned. I was more concerned with setting up the TV but it was very smart and basically did all the work without much input from me. I say you should go for it.

My old one is sitting here in the office with me. I thought about putting it on the curb with a note that the video didn’t work but I don’t want to advertise that I got a new one. (I broke down the box it came in and put it in the recycle bin.) I may eventually take it to the Goodwill.

You sound so capable. Very inspiring… If I get a new TV, it will be smaller, so there’s that.

LOL. I don’t have a lot of choice these days with being retired and living alone during a pandemic. If I can’t do it myself, it’s not going to get done since no one is coming in my house. :grinning:

That’s exactly me, too.

Thanks! May I ask why you didn’t write that out in the first place? It gets kinda old having to ask folks what they mean by their initialisms. I’m hoping that people will start typing out in full what they intend to say instead of making us guess. I hope you’ll join me.
