Need diet/exercise ideas for kidney stone sufferers

Ok, so I had a kidney stone.

How can I keep from ever having this happen again?

Yes, I have an appointment with my Doc and a urologist to discuss things, but I also want some good ideas from others in the know.

Doc says I’m in good shape and pretty healthy except for this. He did say I am on the high side of normal blood pressure, and I should drop some weight.

I am male, caucasian, 40yrs old, muscular but heavy build, if that makes any difference. I am in construction/remodel so any diet should keep up with my activity/strength needs.

Thanks to all the well wishers in the other thread, that was nice.

Anyone?

As far as diet goes, here’s something from Harvard Medical School-

If you suffer from recurrent kidney stones and a high urinary calcium level, you should talk with your doctor about beginning a normal calcium, low salt, and low animal protein diet. This diet appears to be the most effective at preventing the condition.

Unfiltered Apple Juice - trust me on this. I had a big stone lasered out last year (it was about 3/4 in x 1/2 in - needless to say it blocked the tube near the kidney and was NOT going to pass!) And passing the “rubble” was incredibly painful. And one of my contacts suggested 1 cup of unfiltered apple juice (or cider as it’s known here in Alabama) a day and lots of water. The juice helps soften the jagged spurs on the stone so that it will pass easier. And it works!

Of course, not being able to eat because of the pain, I would drink 1 quart of juice, 3 quarts of water. This unfiltered juice has lots of fiber and is very sweet. If you have trouble with sugars, be careful with it. Then I’d walk as vigorously as I could. I don’t know of any other exercise that might help.

I still drink a cup of the unfiltered apple juice for breakfast. And I can really tell a difference with the pain. I hope this helps you.

IANAD, but I agree with the “lots of water”. I’ve been told that one should stay away from caffeine, and to avoid tea (iced or hot). Something about the adverse effects of tannic acid, IIRC…

Hmmm…
I had found a few things online, but no specific regimens. I go back to my doctor Friday. So far, a low protein diet is what I run across more than anything. They had me on clear liquids for a couple of days, in hosp and first day out.

The normal calcium and apple cider info is interesting.

I hadn’t come across anything definitive on coffee or tea, but I am sure gonna ask now! I love coffee.

Thanks for the responses. Anyone else with hints and ideas, lay it on me. But, I have to shut down Mr Compaq for a while. Will be back later tonight.
