Need Help Formatting in Word

Weirddave and I are getting married in July, and as such started to make the invitations last night.

No matter what we try, we can not get the print to line up on the page. Every attempt comes out too far to the right, and this is with the type centered. We have tried changing the margins, but that does not seem to work. In fact, we tried so many things last night that I can’t remember what all we did.

We are using Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it looks like I’m going to be a bald bride if I keep messing with this on my own.

Thank you.

Without knowing more details, it’s hard to diagnose. Would you mind sending me the file so I can look at it?

C’mon, Earthling. Ask straight out: “Am I on the invite list?”

Seriously, though…Did y’all first disable all the autocorrect and other options first? My experience with Word tends to show that most formatting problems disappear after telling the program I want to do the document my way and not its.

It’s on its way to you. Thank you!

Hope you got the new files. Did they work? If not, one other item you may want to try is changing your fonts – first see if the problem remains when you’re using a “generic” face such as Arial or Times, and if these cause no problems, then switch to something more exotic & see what happens.

Beyond that, I’m out of ideas.

They work fine when I print the full page version, thanks a million for your help! The problem is that my invitation paper is half-sheet size, and already cut - I can’t tape them together to run them through the printer without ruining them.

I’m very, very flustered here. Anyone else have any ideas?

Try creating a table of two columns, one row, and then center your text in the cells. You’ll have to play around with it a bit (and don’t forget to turn the table borders off!).

Ginger, not sure if this would help, but when it comes to questions of layout and design (say, wedding invitations as opposed to longer text documents and such), I often turn to PowerPoint.

You can use it to place a line of text anywhere on the page, and align it with others that you place on the page later. You still have control over fonts and sizes and grouping, and the guides can help snap lines to where they belong. Or not, as you choose. Think of it as a simple little layout editor–I used it myself to get an idea of what my wife and I wanted when we got married.

[Disclaimer–This is not meant to be an endorsement; I still think MS software in general could stand improving. But if limited to simple tasks, PP isn’t a bad little layout package.]

As for the half-sheet problem…hmmm, that’s not so easy. If you did choose to use PP, could you do your layout on one half of the page, then copy it onto the other half? You might have to get new full-size invitation paper though, then print, then cut, but it’s an idea.

Anyway, hope something here helps. Good luck!

Ginger, I have other ideas. Look in your in-box.

And such ideas! Earthling, I owe you a great big kiss.

Your help has been invaluable to me, and Dave and I both are sincerely grateful. Invitations will be in the mail within two days.
