I understand your dilemma. Really.
Maybe he found an old model like this used some place. See if you can find out what this company made about ten years ago that would have fit in this technology slot, then look on eBay or Craigslist for it. If he bought an older model of this, used, and without the accessories, it could have been about $750. Of course, in older money.
But, if he really means it when he says “Don’t worry about it,” then get him the best new one you can afford, with the gift receipt. He can keep it; he can take it back and trade up on a better one that he wants; trade it down, and use the extra money on a dinner out, or a new phone; or return it to the store for cash, and give the money to charity.
He would be much more impressed if you built him a new one! Well, OK, I don’t know him or what impresses him, but I would be impressed…
