Need help with a movie (surprise, surprise)

A friend caught the end of a movie and wants to the know the name…

All I got is that it’s Anthony Quinn comforting a woman (believe she was a prostitute) as she dies. As soon as it is learned she is dead, hateful old biddies come in and start rifling through her belongings taking what they want.

The movie was in black and white and she said Quinn was middle aged but not old. (Which I found amusing, the man was born in 1915, middle age of 45 or 50 gives us 1960 or so.

Nothing stands out. Have a look through his IMDB page circa 1960 and maybe you can find something.

Was it a period piece, or set in the modern (for then) day?

Zorba the Greek (1966) might be the one. This review reveals plot points, for those who might want to see the movie without being spoiled, one of which matches your description.

If it’s black and white it’s almost certainly ZORBA. That is definitely a scene from the movie and I can’t think of any other Quinn movies in which that was a plot. (Quinn and Lila Kedrova [the prostitute] were both nominated for Oscars for their roles- she won, he didn’t- and reprised them several times in the stage musical for which they both won Tonies [both for the original run and for the revival].)

Minor correction to the above: Kedrova and Quinn originated the musical roles in the West End production of Zorba and won awards; they reprised their roles 15 years later in a Broadway revival and won Tonies.
