That’s a great idea - except I haven’t got even that much money right now. I understand that it’s incomprehensible to many folks that no, I don’t even have that much money but poverty sucks that way. When I say I’m broke I mean broke - I just don’t have the money for even that solution right now. In a couple weeks, maybe, but the problem is the heat is here now.
I’m probably going to have to send the husband to a cooling center. He’s deteriorating and needs some genuine cool air.
I understand. Maybe in a couple of weeks you should consider Craigslist, if only because this summer is devastatingly hot. In the meantime of course, get him to a library or a cooling center. Good luck!
Good idea. I just got an auto-call from my county telling me that such things are available. Doesn’t seem right to have to beat the heat 24/7 - save all of the techniques for nighttime.
The idea of a fan in the room to help distribute the cool air is a good idea. Also, if he can take it, give him a spray bottle with water in it. He can spritz himself and the fan will help cool him off as it evaporates.
In anticipation of next year, you might want to start putting away whatever bits of cash you can towards the purchase of a split unit for your bedroom. They’re much more efficient than a window shaker, although more expensive.
I agree with the idea of putting the AC in the bedroom, where it should be big enough to do the job. Most people can handle the heat in the day time, but at night it’s different. Trying to sleep when you stick to the sheets is miserable.
I’m wondering if the AC’s thermostat is malfunctioning - it just doesn’t want to kick the compressor in below 83. It cools that far and no further, but even as the temperature rises outside it keeps it in the mid-80’s.
If it’s blowing cold air, then it’s working. I would suspect that most of your problem is from too large a space, too small an AC, and poor insulation that allows the heat in faster than you can dehumidify it. Your house has become a giant heat sink, and since heat flow is from hot to cold. . . Think of a car AC, which commonly has these problems. A combination of any of these things will prevent you from cooling that space, regardless of what you do, unless you are able to correct them.
We just went through this air conditioning mess. We have a small house built in the 1950s that we love because it is near the beach. Seven years ago we built a room on the back for my wife’s office and project room. The central air has never given that room enough heat and cool. This year the national heat wave forced us to do something about it.
At first we looked at window units, but could not find anyone to do the installation work.
FYI, Lowes has a new kind of room air conditioner/heater that is about the size of a mini refrigerator and has a vent about the size of a dryer vent. It was $500, and it works very well. Even though we rewired the house five years ago the new unit kept tripping the breaker. A friend suggested finding an electrician that works with the problems of mobile homes. These guys knew what they were doing. We ended up paying an extra $300 for a designated line that goes directly into the electric box.
The unit has a drip pan that can be emptied daily, but we just drilled a second hole in the wall, and stuck in a small hose that empties directly into the flower bed outside.
Those of you who sent me PM’s - I’ll get back to you, but perhaps not until tomorrow. I have to make cool sleeping arrangements for hubby as his health simply can’t take this heat anymore, so keeping him healthy is first priority. It’s too hot for him to stay here again tonight. If I can get back to you sooner I will.
