Do any dopers have experience with international shipping? I am trying to send a crate of educational resources to Taiwan, to be used by my boss for a class he has been invited there to teach. The stuff is valuable, but it is not for sale or distribution: It will be used during the class then shipped back to the US afterwards. That being the case, I assume I should not have to pay any import tarrifs or duties, but I can’t find any useful info on the web. I am shipping via FedEx, but even their web site calculator seems to lack an option for non-dutiable goods. Can anyone out there in doper-land help me out? I need to get a cost estimate on this whole project, and if we have to pay import duty, it could sink us. Thanks!
Call 1-800-GoFedEx and wind your way through the menus until you find someone who specializes in international shipping.
Explain what you’re shipping (books, filmstrips, videos, etc?) and their educational purpose, that they’ll promptly be shipped back home, and so forth. There’s only just so much info that can fit into a website, and this seems to be one of those things that didn’t fit.
Depending on the return freight cost, you might find it cheaper to dispose of the stuff in Taiwan after using it.
