A guy in my office is getting married in about two weeks, and I got together with a few people to organize a little office dessert potluck sort of thing on Friday. We’re doing this because he’s a really nice guy, but for various reasons, most of our coworkers will not be able to attend the wedding and reception.
I think in a situation like this, it would be nice to give him a gift at such an event, but I don’t want to pass the hat around, because most of the folks in the office are already going to be buying stuff from his hoity-toity registry, so I don’t think it is fair for them to buy two gifts. My way out of this is that I, as his supervisor, would spend a few bucks out of my own pocket and just label whatever it is as a communal gift.
The problem is that I’m having difficulty thinking of a good gift. Ideally, it would be something a bit humorous, not cliche, personal for him (since we’re already investing so much in the registry), and, of course, appropriate for an office party. Estimated price tag, oh, maybe around $40 bucks or so.
Can anyone help out with some ideas here?
