Need ideas on an office wedding-related gift sort of thing

A guy in my office is getting married in about two weeks, and I got together with a few people to organize a little office dessert potluck sort of thing on Friday. We’re doing this because he’s a really nice guy, but for various reasons, most of our coworkers will not be able to attend the wedding and reception.

I think in a situation like this, it would be nice to give him a gift at such an event, but I don’t want to pass the hat around, because most of the folks in the office are already going to be buying stuff from his hoity-toity registry, so I don’t think it is fair for them to buy two gifts. My way out of this is that I, as his supervisor, would spend a few bucks out of my own pocket and just label whatever it is as a communal gift.

The problem is that I’m having difficulty thinking of a good gift. Ideally, it would be something a bit humorous, not cliche, personal for him (since we’re already investing so much in the registry), and, of course, appropriate for an office party. Estimated price tag, oh, maybe around $40 bucks or so.

Can anyone help out with some ideas here?

Hmmm. It’s hard to come up with a humorous wedding gift that doesn’t rely on either gender steroetypes or honeymoon references…so here’s one that includes both!

If you know where they are going on their honeymoon, you could get a couple of nice guidebooks (then you can say the gift is really intended for his fiance, because it is a well-known fact that men never ask for directions.)

One of my favorite gifts that I got for my wedding was a beautiful wood-covered photo album with our names and the date of our wedding engraved on a little brass plaque. I didn’t really have any nice photo albums-- this one’s nice enough to use as a coffe table book. We put our wedding and honeymoon photos in it and it’s now in our living room-- where else?-- on the coffee table. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it.

For stuff like this I like to give an american silver eagle.
