I am slowly running out of movies to rent. I don’t like most Hollywood movies. So I have been forced to go into the archives go underground or look off shelf. Some I like and then there are some (i.e.Caligula) that one must see first hand what the hype is. There are plenty to browse from but…have any recommendations given the list below(in no order.)
Candy
Lucky
P.S. your cat is dead
Sleepy Heads
Flesh Gordon
A boy and his dog
Once Upon a Time in the Midlands
American Splendor
Caligula
Go
Rivers Edge
Diner with the Melvin’s
Dummy
Welcome to the Dollhouse
God Told Me To
Fantastic Planet
I think, without a doubt, that the best film on the list is Larry Cohen’s provocative, strange, and bizarrely brilliant God Told Me To. One of the great horror movies and unjustly overlooked (as is true for almost everything Cohen did).
Happiness and Storytelling, both films from Todd Solondz, director of Welcome to the Dollhouse.
From that list I would pick American Splendor, it’s a really funny and moving story about comic artist Harvey Pekar. Paul Giamatti gives a really great performance.
If I might add my own suggestion to your list, this is a film that I always tell people to rent because it is one of my favorites and almost no one has seen it or even heard of it- Proof. It’s a low budget Australian film from 1991 about a blind photographer Martin (Hugo Weaving), his friend (a young Russell Crowe), and Martin’s female housekeeper who threatens to come between them. Superb performances all around, and very emotionally moving but not in a typical cliche Hollywood way.
Hey,
I meant:smack: to say the “list” are ones that I have seen and from that what do you recommend.
Well, if you haven’t gone to the theaters to see Napoleon Dynamite, go see it! It’s hilarious and extremely well-done. As for films to rent, do you like any old film noir? If you do, M is a classic, if you can find it. Also, some of Hitchcock’s first films like The 39 Steps would be good.
I would definitely recommend “Welcome to the Dollhouse” and “Go”. I would also recommend checking out Netflix for rental possibilities outside the Hollywood norm. Have gotten plenty of small independant movies from them.
I had posted my recent list from netflix.
Here is what is on my current Netflix list:
The Wolves of Kroner
State Fair ( for the musical and debating society thread)
Mean Girls
The Ladykillers
Saved
The 24th Day
Fall Time
Grief
Dawn of the Dead
Walking Tall
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Latter Days
Twist
I tend to like small independant films with a gay slant. Always take a chance with these, but have found alot of good ones. Two recent rentals I liked were “Die, Mommie, Die” and “2 x 4”.
I thought P.S. Your Cat Is Dead sucked. Read the book instead.
I was gonna mention Go but then finally caught it on your list. How about Rushmore?
