A friend of mine was on a trip and had some kind of Lima Bean packaged snack that she really liked (sounds nasty to me but to each their own). I have wanted to find it for her here in Chicago but cannot find it anywhere. This is partly due to the fact I am not very clear on exactly what it is called.
So, thought I’d ask the Dopers. The lima bean snack (I think) had a lemon-pepper seasoning on it. The beans were dried and eaten out of a bag just like peanuts in a bag.
Anyone know what this is and, more to the point, where I can buy some?
Yes. Find them at Mexican groceries. I can’t for the life of me what they’re called, but they sell them in the same section where they sell lime-and-hot-pepper peanuts, lime-and-hot-pepper tamarinds, and other snack goodies. One place you can find them for sure is at Pete’s Market on 43rd and Pulaski. I’ll have a look when I get home what they’re called, if no one beats me to it.
My guess is seasoned soybeans as well. There’s a number of brands. The one I get at People’s Market/Wild Oats is Mighty Mo Munchies. They’re actually pretty good.
PS. If per chance you work in the Loop, I can always pick some up when I go home tonight and drop some off to you tomorrow. IIRC, they’re flavored with lime and hot pepper. (Notice a trend in Mexican snacking?)
At the local Pete’s Market I found two brands of the stuff, both sold near the checkout counter (in the same place you’d find candy bars and the such): La Fiesta Habas Picositas Roasted & Salted Hot Fava Beans, and Mi Costenita Habas Con Chile Fried Limabeans [sic] with Chili. That should give you enough info to find it at your local Mexican grocer’s.
I do work in the Loop but it is too much to ask to have Dopers go shopping on my behalf (very nice offer though so thank you). I live on the north side and there are some Mexican restaurants about so I’ll go check them out.
