Need search engines for professionals

Hi Everyone,

Are there any great medical and psychology internet search engines for the field. I don’t want to use Google it is does not give me enough research information. I don’t need sites for the lay person, I need search engines that will give me websites for medical and psychology professionals.

For medical science (defined quite broadly, including psychiatry and a lot of biological science in general, but not much psychology) you can use PubMed.

And professionals do use Google Scholar, which is going to find you more actual articles than PubMed (which mostly gets you only abstracts).

Unfortunately, most of the actual scientific literature (actual articles as opposed to abstracts) is behind publishers’ pay walls, and can only be accessed via a university library (or by paying extortionate fees), and is best searched using a university library online catalog. As an outsider, you may be able to access the catalog and maybe do some searches, but you will not be able to access the actual articles (unless perhaps they have been Open Access published, which is fairly rare). However, Google Scholar will sometimes be able to get you around that by finding copies (sometimes drafts) that the authors themselves (or sometimes someone else) have made available online.

Some stuff these days is published in Open Access journals, designed to be free online, and more and more research is likely to be published this way as time goes on, but as of now it is still a small proportion of the scientific and scholarly literature as a whole.

I wanted to say “PubMed” first off, but I was scooped.

Another tip: use technical lingo in your search for more technical sites. Example: searching “cancer” may give links to scholarly articles somewhere around page zillion, but “hepatocellular carcinoma” might give more targeted hits.

I’ve often wanted to post a thread to find out how well respected pub med is. I often go to it to do research.

Also check out Mendeley.
