You don’t want a pretty darn good goalie. You want the best goalie money can buy. And you need to back and get the Jecht shot. With the team I described above, I never lost a single game.
How do I go back and get the Jecht Shot w/o starting the game all over again?
It is one of the two boat rides. Go up and examine the ball lying on deck. I was going to tell you about Zanarkand, but I guess you already figured it out. I got so lucky with the Chocobo race. I tried it a couple times and did OK, but when it cam time to try for the celestial weapons I set aside a whole night. I got really lucky and did it the first time. Whew.
If you don’t play any blitzball, but scout for players the whole time through (you will have to go through again as you will need to capture 10 of every fiend in the game) you can build up and ass-kickin team, so that when you actually get to playing you never lose. Another helpful hint: after you finish a season of league play or a tournament immediately exit blitzball and sav e your game. Then you can soft reset the game and look at what the prizes for the next tournament/season are. If you don’t get the reel or sigil you want, then soft reset again until you do.
Oh, and when you start capturing everything, pick three people you want to be uber upgraded to do it. I had rotated everybody into most battles up to this point as I wanted to boost all their levels, but it is too much of a pain when you are capturing. I recommend Tidus, Wakka, and Rikku so you are fast, can take out air creatures easy, and Rikku can steal the whole time. In fact, you can have the first two use capture weapons and Rikku use her celestial which doubles her AP so she can quickly become more powerful than Lulu with a celestial weapon.
These are also a good party since they are the only ones you can use underwater.
Ah, but each (or almost each) Aeon is linked to a celestial weapon. Either unlocking or equipping that weapon (not sure which) gives break damage limit to the respective aeon.
Mostly, I didn’t like the celestial weapon and monster ranching minigames because they just plain took too long. I kinda wanted to do it, but it wasn’t nearly enough fun to spend another 10 hours building levels so I could just barely start dealing with the super monsters.
I finished the process of obtaining and activating Wakka’s celestial weapon last night. Weeping, creeping Jeebus do I hate blitzball! Please, somebody assure me that there are no way kewl items offered as blitzball prizes that can’t be obtained by other means…
That leaves Kimhari and Tidus. That butterfly chasing is driving me nuts. In the area with the harp player, I haven’t been able to navigate that last curve without hitting a red butterfly. As a result, I get to the 7th butterfly just in time to see it disappear. Any hints?
I haven’t even tried to get the upgrade for Tidus. The chocobo racing is so completely removed from being fun that I keep putting it off.
Y’know, I actually kind of like blitzball. I quickly realized the AI sucks and switched movement to manual, and that seemed to make things go better. I even went back to an old save and won that first game (the only difference is that in the cutscene where Wakka says goodbye to the team, he’s carrying a freakin’ huge trophy).
However, I don’t have anywhere near the patience to get/power up Tida’s and Lulu’s ultimate weapons. And Kimahri? No way. Although they would be very useful – I’m playing the international version, and if I make a few wrong turns, I run into a Dark Aeon and it pretty much stomps me dead.
I’m amazed people found the K-man’s celestial weapon hard to get.
Certainly not as bad as Lulu or Tidus (or even Wakka for those of us who detest Blitzball).
I’m afraid I can’t give any hints, though - I can’t figure out what I might have done that you didn’t.
Hints?
Obsessive, maniacal, compulsive replays. I did Kimahri and Tidus’s final weapons one stormy night – just turned the lights down low, plopped in front of the TV, and kept playing until I hit that Zen state where I could actually win. All in one go – if I got up, I knew I’d forget where the blasted butterflies or balloons(?) were.
But even with that, I still couldn’t win the blitzball tournaments. Any of them. I’m with you on the hate of that particular ‘feature’ of the game.
Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
I thought I’d never be able to stand a chance against any of the creations in the monster area, but after a few more hours (well, more like 10) of leveling up, I can defeat the area creations and even one of the original monsters. Ok, I use the Magus Sisters a lot, because they are the only ones that can hit for 99,999 damage. Now I have to catch some more monsters to unlock the species creations.
In Final Fantasy related news, I read that Kingdom Hearts 2 got pushed back to February. I’ve been looking forward to that one for more than two years.
