Need some recommendations on what kind of scotch would make a good Christmas gift...

My grandfather really likes Scotch, and I had an idea to get him a bottle as a gift. Because of his age, he can’t really handle drinking scotch too often, but he enjoys the taste and a bottle can often last him a long time. I’ve talked to my mom about getting my grandfather a bottle of scotch for Christmas, and was thinking about what kind to get.

My mom told me a story about how she had gotten him a bottle of scotch when she went on vacation to the UK, and how she had gotten the wrong kind…she mentioned to me that my grandfather really likes a brand of Scotch called Bell’s, but that it isn’t available in the United States.

I’m not too keen on scotch, and was wondering if any Dopers who happen to be connoseurs on the beverage might enlighten me as to what would be some good choices that I could get in the US.

Bell’s is common-or-garden Scotch. Not bad, but nothing special. Get your Grampa a bottle of single malt. Ask at your local booze emporium. They’ll know. It should cost about $50.

He’ll sip it and love it.

I happen to be in the midst of trying out my first bottle of 21 year old Scotch called “The Balvenie”.

I recommend it.

Balvenie is great stuff! I’d also suggest Glenmorangie, Oban and Aberlour as some brands to look for single malt wise.

Lavagulin, Laphroaig, and Talisker get my vote.

Balvenie is fantastic - and I am one of those blasphemers that prefers the plain old original kind to the extra-aged, special cask or other “lets stiff the easily impressed americans” varieties. A sure thing.
Oban is also really good stuff.

I’ve heard that Scoresby is a great brand, but i am more of a chocolate milk kind of guy

Cannot overlook the Glenfiddich.
