Need suggestions for Philadelphia art/music subscriptions

My son is a college student in the Philadelphia area and doesn’t want anything that takes up space in his tiny dorm room as a Christmas gift. He already has gift certificates for Wawa’s and Ruby’s Diner, and subscriptions to WaPo, NYT, and Wired, so his dad and I thought maybe we’d cover the cost of an evening at the symphony, or membership at an art museum, or something of that nature.

I’m about to do some research on line, but welcome ideas from people familiar with Philadelphia’s offerings. FTR, my son is not an arts person, in fact he’s a total science nerd who does not go out of his way at all to experience the arts. However, he really enjoys classical music and modern art whenever he’s presented with them. (Not that long ago, he said, “I should get some friends together and go to the symphony!” He was sincere, but won’t ever get around to it on his own because he’s so busy with his studies, research, job, and non-artsy extracurriculars. So a little push from mom and dad seems like a good idea.)

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

If he is a science nerd why not get him something science related, for example a membership at the Franklin Institute:

The Barnes Museum is a Philadelphia treasure. Dr. Barnes amassed one of THE greatest collections of Impressionist and post Impressionist art, with uniquely varied collections of Renoir and Cezanne, in the world.

Having access to it is a great Philly thing.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the great orchestras of the world. And they recently hired music super-star Yannick Nezet-Seguin and their music director.

But I second the Franklin Institute. As an 11 or 12 year old, I used to try to go there every month to see the new planetarium show. Right now they have a smashing exhibit of the terra cotta army. The museum of Natural History was interesting too. And just a week, I visited for the first time the Mutter medical museum and that was interesting too.

Examples of words that should never be used in the same sentence - “smashing” and “terra cotta army”.
