Need the ultimate Nanaimo Bars recipe

Now I want to irritate people by calling them Sne Nay Muxw bars.

YES!!!

I was trying to think earlier about an alternative filling, and was thinking that something cheescakey would be just the thing. Sweet is fine, but I’d like to be able to eat more than one piece before the teeth actually fall out of my head.

I’m stunned to realize that there are things that are too sweet for me. One would never guess this to look at me

Or maybe just Salish Squares.

I’m so glad you started this thread. I’ve been reading along, and it got me to craving. It took some effort for me to find the custard powder (found some at Ballard Market!) - I’ve been here in the US for four and a half years now, and it was the first time I’d thought to make Nanaimo bars (with the exception of a couple of kits mother sent to me when I first got here, but it’s not quite the same).

Mine are half-gone, and sitting in the freezer. They are delicious frozen! :smack:

They don’t bother me in terms of sweetness, but perhaps that’s a by-product of growing up Canadian. My husband finds them through-the-roof sweet. He likes them, but only itty-bitty bites.

They are tough to cut; I remember growing up, me mother having to get dad to cut them for her. But she’s five foot nothing, a hundred and nothing pounds. I managed okay, but I heft five gallon buckets of paint around for a living.
