On the Dope, several years ago, we did a “candy exchange” and I got some candy from an Australian poster.
I really loved all three items, and I’ve only found them one place here in the States, although they’re probably elsewhere, and I haven’t seen them.
Does anyone know where to find Jaffas, Violet Crumble, and the Cherry Ripe bar, in the northeast part of Kansas? Failing that, can they be ordered online in packages smaller than those marketed to wholesalers?
I’m also going into withdrawal now that Easter is past and my Cadbury eggs are all gone. I went to their website and found mention of Cadbury egg flavors(one with orange fondant!) that are sold in Australia or New Zealand, but not in the US. Makes me want to book a ticket to Down Under.
And I wouldn’t mind a general talk about differences in candies between different countries.
This won’t help any US dopers (including the OP, sorry!), but if you are in the UK, there is a site that sells stuff from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand:
I recently had a care package of Pinky bars delivered from an NZ friend. They were goooooood!
If you tell me what you want I will buy it and post it to you. You can pay for it through my PayPal account.
Of course you will need to have a bit of blind trust - I know I’m honest but you don’t.
I know an interesting and slightly disgusting bit of trivia about Cherry Ripe bars: In the 1970s my step dad worked in the factory where they were made. He said that if glazed cherries were in short supply they would use colored turnip instead.
Violet Crumble is just chocolate and honeycomb, so I’m surprised if you can’t find it in the US under a different name or just as a generic candy, just like those little blocks of liquorice.
Jaffas are chocolate in an orange-flavoured candy shell, sort of like an M&M with different flavouring.
Based on what it says on wikipedia, it’s only sold in a few states as a specialty item, and it’s probably not exactly the same. The link contains the names it’s sold under, which might help you locate it, Baker.
Actually, Australians and New Zealanders aren’t “Brits” any more than Americans are. (And membership of the Commonwealth of Nations does not equal “British”.)
jkirkman, I looked at that Simply Oz site and they do have all that stuff. What I find interesting is that it’s based in Cinncinatti, Ohio. Remember in the OP I said I’d found one place that had the candy? It’s in Fairfield, Ohio, kind of part of Cincinnatti. The store is Jungle Jim’s International Market, simply the best food place I ever shopped in!
And I’d planned on visiting Ohio, and Jungle Jim’s, in August.
