I’ve been working on a business plan for a bit and need to find a developer to partner with to build the website. I’ve tried networking among my friend, but so far that’s yielded few good leads. Is there a site where developers congregate that would be a good place to inquire? Any other avenues I should pursue? I live in New York and am looking to find someone local who would be willing to work almost entirely for equity.
Craigslist jumps to mind, post a gig or job on there.
Also check www.getafreelancer.com and see if you can find someone there.

What kind of web site do you want: shopping, content, company information?
Essentially, the project involves integrating payment processing systems and database management with customized off-the-shelf user-generated content software. The most succinct, but not entirely accurate, way of categorizing it would be a Web 2.0 e-commerce site—kind of eBay meets Wikipedia.
That pretty much rules out a HTML tutorial or Front Page Express.
Have you considered getting the developer with the host. For instance I use Netfirms.com to host my site. They have commerce plans you could try out for $75 for a quarter. With these plans come plenty of tools so you could build the site yourself. At least to complete the business plan.
WebHostDir.com is a place to start looking at which web host would best suit your needs for building a working site.
Thanks for your replies. My site’s description is (perhaps overly) simple, but the execution requires real development, tens—if not hundreds—of thousands of dollars worth.
