Need To Get Rid Of Old Television

I have a Sony 40" CRT (HD sort of) television that still works perfectly, though I am sure that there would be no buyers for this 300+ lb beast.

Does anyone know of a charity that would like to have it?

Do you have Goodwill stores around there? I expect they would take it.

Goodwill or Amvets.

A lot of Goodwill stores in the Houston area won’t. Not worth the trouble. The one nearest my house recommended recycling.

If no stores will take it, put it up on Freecycle or Craigslist free stuff.

Post it for free on Craigslist, there are families that could use it, and you won’t have to move it.

Looks like I do have a Donation Center not far away, but I don’t think that they will pick up. There’s no way that I’m going to move this myself.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, but I’m not sure about inviting potential wackos or ax-murderers into my home.

It really depends on your locale.

In the state of Oregon, places that sell TVs have to take old ones for “recycling”. So Goodwills there (since they sell used TVs) will take them.

In California, I believe, there’s a disposal fee you have to pay and locations where you can drop it off are limited.

Around here, Goodwill just takes them anyway. The ones that work are resold and the ones that don’t …

But other thrift shops generally don’t take any CRT TVs or monitors.

None the above concerns the issue of getting it somewhere. Different problem. (I have one remaining CRT device. A pretty hefty TV. I’d take it to Goodwill but I want to save my back until later.)

If you can get it to the curb before garbage day, it might disappear during the night.

The last one I got rid of I just wheeled it out with a dolly and set it next to the trash cans. Before I even set it down someone who happened to be walking by asked me if it still worked. I told him it was still working the last time I tried it, and he could have it if he wanted. It was gone a half hour later.

Make up your mind, you can’t have it both ways.

Do you have a porch or driveway that you can move it to? If so, list it on Craigslist or Freecycle and then tell the responder where they can pick it up.

Put it on the curb, tape a sign to it, “Free - it works!”

If you can’t get it onto your porch or into your garage, you could try to sell it on Craigslist for maybe $50 cash. Or even only $20. I’d expect asking for money would get a better normal-to-wacko ratio.

Better yet, put a sign on it saying “For Sale - $50”.
Someone will steal it.

My parents had a 36" Sony CRT television that also weighed about 300 pounds. When they were ready to replace it with an LCD television, I strongly suggested that they buy the new one from a place like Best Buy that offered free pickup of the old set as part of the sale.

You won’t get $50. You might get $20, but even that is iffy.

Why don’t you offer it to your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers?

Actually, Goodwill in some areas will NOT take CRT tube devices anymore. (For a second, I thought the OP asked how to get rid of a skeleton! Yikes!)

Goodwill declined mine, but Salvation Army says they still are happy to get them. Even better are some “off-brand” thrift shops that support a single home-grown drug treatment program or similar local charity.

Waaay too complicated, it’s better to consult the internets.
