Need to re-build section of faux brick on commercial building. I have no idea where to start.

If anybody can help me in any way at all, I would be so grateful. My dad owns a commercial building which he is trying to sell. The exterior of the building was made with some kind of fake brick which sits on some type of Styrofoam, which site on concrete. Recently, some kids have been vandalizing the exterior building and breaking the bricks and the Styrofoam off it. I just received a warning letter from the city saying I will be fined and taken to court if it is not fixed.

I’m going there tomorrow morning to try and fix it, but I know absolutely nothing about this sort of thing, so if anybody can please explain what I would need to buy, and how I would go about installing it, I would be so grateful. I tried searching on Google, but all I found were projects about painting bricks in a home. If there are any videos on this topic that can help me, please let me know. I don’t know what to do.

I uploaded some pics so you can see what I’m talking about. As you can see the damage is extensive. The picture with the small piece missing is a different side of the building.

Thanks in advance.

go to a fake brick store, building materials store or brick yard. they will have the produces and instructions on how to apply it.

Thanks for the reply. I had already checked, but I don’t have any small places like that around me. I’m going to Home Depot to see what I can find, BUT like I said, I know literally nothing about this sort of thing, and if I can’t find any help at Home Depot, then I will be lost. The building is a far drive, so I’m trying to gather as much information as possible ahead of time.

What you’re looking for is ‘thin brick’ veneer. Here’s a website with examples: http://www.generalshale.com/products/products.php?type=thin_brick

You’ll need to find a local brick supplier, then try to match the brick on the building before repairing the underlying support structure and re-applying the new brick.

Okay thank you. I will find a brick supplier. What do you know about that blue styrofoam material? How can I bond the piece back to the concrete that has fallen? I need to do that before I can re-build, right? Do you know what it’s called?

blue stuff looks like extruded polystyrene insulation. Home Depot has it.

there are adhesives that come in a plastic bucket that you apply with a notched trowel. there are a number of adhesives and depends on the materials to be joined.

ask at the stores you go to.

also stop at your library and look for books on brick work. you are interested in just the thin veneer info.

I have quite a job ahead of me. Thanks for your help. And everybody else

Surely your dad has insurance for his commercial building which will cover hiring an expert to repair that damage!

Oddly enough, the blue stuff probably is actual brand-name Styrofoam. I can’t quite tell from the photos, but it looks like it was peeled off in decently solid chunks, and can be glued back on with something like PL Premium, Sika or Liquid Nails.

The hardest part will be finding a match for the bricks, but they look fairly ordinary. Home Depot and Lowes have dozens of styles of brick veneer, aka thin brick, on their website, and I’d hope they have actual samples in-store.

Once you have the bricks, they get glued on, then the mortar is done more as a tuckpointing technique.
