Need travel tips: Hey, Chicago, how's the traffic this weekend?

We’re planning a family junket up to Chicago this weekend (Sunday-Monday-Tuesday) to do a “Museum Thing”, which means Science & Industry and possibly the Shedd Aquarium. We’ve been hearing nothing but BAD THINGS  about the Chicago traffic situation lately, what with the Wacker Drive thing and the Lake Shore Drive thing. If we’re coming in from Downstate on I-55 (the Stevenson) and plan on staying in a motel on the South Side somewhere, how bad is it? Be serious now. I don’t wanna drag The Cat Who Walks Alone away from The Man In Her Life  for the space of three whole days [oh, the horror–“Mom!!”] just so she can spend them driving around looking for parking places. She’ll never forgive me.

Also, are there any huge convention thingies this weekend (bearing in mind that it’s Memorial Day weekend) that I ought to know about, in terms of avoidance? We had to cancel a “Museum Thing” once because there was some kind of soccer thing going on (World Cup? Olympics?) and the skinny was that every motel in town had people sleeping on the balconies (“you don’t want to come here”).

So?
