If people remember about two months ago I wrote about making a kilt. Well I’m at it again.
I decided (well Zil, not I) that I should be more circumspect. I can’t go about flaunting my ankles and GASP knees in the middle of gatherings anymore. Not with the Inquisiton coming to town. Plus I’m just getting tired of having everyone preach at me to be more pious and that I shouldn’t dress as a man. No matter how much fun it is to tweak the noses of the Elders and those who think what I wear really matters.
So my first step is to undo the kilt. Hey I don’t have anything else, so I’ll just make a ‘proper’ skirt out of it right? And this time I decide to do it right. All those danglies from the weave unravelling are just annoying. So I started at around noon when I got home from the job hunt. Of course I put it off until the day of the game. When else would I do it? I don’t really want my roomie around snickering and trying to give me pointers. I know how to sew. I don’t need his help.
It took me about 2.5 hours to hem up 3 of the sides. The cloth is pretty wide so I’ll have to fold it over to make it the proper length anyway. But I want a nice hem at the bottom and at the edges. Now I am going insane trying to do the pleats again. It took me an hour last time but it’s driving me nuts this time.
So I am taking a break… getting a breather before I go back to finish the last few pleats and sew them into place. (It’s laying on the floor right now) I have little pricks in my thumb and fingers from the needles which sting like hell and are annoying me even more. The thread kept breaking and getting tangled while I was sewing grrrr. I hate when that happens. I am careful about it but sometimes it just can’t be helped.
I don’t know how women managed to sew whole wardrobes by hand. I’d have gone nuts in a few days. Of course back then I may have learned how to do it properly. That and I probably wouldn’t be rushed or have had help (like a sewing circle).
I have about 2 hours left to finish, so I should be able to manage. It’s only a costume not clothing I’ll be wearing day in and out so it’s not like I have to be too too dainty and neat about my sewing. Though it would be better if I could do a proper job.
I miss my sewing machine!!!
