Walter Cronkite did!
That’s right. I recently unearthed cassette tapes my father made of the moon landing. About 8 hours or so from pre-landing to well into the first EVA.
Cronkite and some commentator are discussing whether Armstrong has something to say as he exits the Lander. Just after Neil says his famous words, and it doesn’t really matter what he said, because it’s too garbled to tell, there is a disquieting pause, and Cronkite says, “What did he say?” A commentator with Cronkite says, “I think that was the quote.” :o They completely missed one of the most engrossing events of all time! Boy, I wish Dad had a camcorder in 1969!
