Charm School - loved it General’s Daughter - Movie was close, but book was (obviously) better. Gold Coast - His best. I so want to see a movie made, even if they do hack it up. Plum Island - John Corey is my favorite character yet, even if this one was a little over the top.
Which brings me to Lion’s Game - I just finished it last night. I was riveted to every page, that is until the end. I was so disappointed with the anti-climactic conclusion. In Plum Island’s climax John Corey was one bad mofo, eviscerating his foe in the good v. evil confrontation. In Lion’s Game he hides behind a rock until the bad guy gives up and leaves, getting away scot free. Huh? I so wanted him to strangle him with his bare hands or something. And the whole “they got married and lived happily ever after” schlock put me off as well.
I can only say that if Mr. DeMille isn’t in his den typing up an Asad Kahlil sequel right this very moment, then he’ll have to answer to me. And I’ll make Asad look like a school marm.
As an aside - I always “cast” the books I read. In this one I see Dennis Leary as the perfect John Corey, and Goran Visnjic as the quintessential Asad Kahlil. For Kate Mayfield, for some reason I kept thinking of Bridget Fonda.
Jack, I’m sorry I haven’t read those books. I wish I did just so you could feel better. If you start an Elizabeth George thread I’d be happy to participate, but that’s probably too girly for you.
Jack Get ready for more (disillusionment). I’ve read DeMille, not one of my favorite. His female characters IMHO, are more like male fantasies of females vs. actual females, so that tends to distract me. But, I don’t hate his stuff.
I suppose I can understand that. Being a male I guess I get sucked right in.
So do you have any recommendations for good paperback thrillers?
I’ve read most of Ludlums Bourne books, I really enjoyed those. And I’ve read most of the Rules or Prey series (can’t remember the author) and didn’t really like them that much but good time passers, and some of, um, shit, whats-his-name - Along Came a Spider - Kiss the girls. Ooh, and Harris - Silence of the Lambs - Red Dragon - Hannibal, those were excellent
The only genre I’ve really had enough of is the legal thrillers (Turow, Grisham).
James Patterson did Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. He has a new one that I just read a review of that was pretty awful. I tend not to read this genre, but I did try Spider a few years ago. I remember two things about that book, it wasn’t great and that he described his hero as looking honest and trustworthy (or something else positive) just like O.J. Simpson. I bet he’s changed that description in the last couple of books.
Thank you! God, it was right on the tip of my tongue.
Yeah, I wasn’t that impressed with them either. Except for the gore they seemed written for about an eighth grade level. But, I’ve started novels that I figured out totally sucked in the first 20 pages, but finished them anyway. I’m kind of obsessive like that.
