Who the fuck writes software based on something designed for INDEX cards in the 1880s? It wouldn’t even be Y2K compliant!
Soundex is a perfectly legitimate algorithm that is not affected by Y2K or any other “modern” issues. That it is being used as a stop-gap to identify “terrorists” is pretty stupid, but the theory behind Soundex and (most of) the applications based on it are fine. It is not perfect (but is not intended to be) and it is, of course, possible that transliterating languages in non-Roman alphabets presents problems not envisaged when it was developed.
The “120 year old” reference and the “index card” reference are both supplied simply for their apparent shock value and have no bearing on the actual issues involved.
