Neon Genesis Evangelion: Explanations (Spoilers in OP)

Alright, I just finished the series. Over the last two weekends I have watched every episode for the second time (excluding End of Evangelion).

I need explanations. I’ve read all about it, and I think I have it figured out. So I’ll mention the key things I don’t understand and what I know/think I know about them.

[list]
[li]Human Instrumentality Project[/li]
Would be caused by Third Impact. Lets all humans decide own destiny(?)

[li]Lilith[/li]
Who is “she”? Apparently all life besides the Evas came from her, and they found her on Antarctica, assumably already crucified?

[li]Adam and the Second Impact[/li]
He was the glowing giant that looked like an Eva. Caused Second Impact by… being shrunk? Do they explain how they managed to embryonize him?

That’s it for now, but I’ll be posting more questions later.

Oops, lemmie try again:

Oh, and maybe it’s just me being a sixteen year old male, but that part with Misato kissing Shinji and saying “we’ll do the rest later” right before she died was touching, don’t ya think?

No, I was so jealous of that little bitch Shinji.

Not quite. Instrumentality was more or less the taking of every human mind and squishing them all into one mind.
Why? Well one of the themes that touched on through out the show is Hedge Hogs dilemma IE the closer you try to get to someone the more you can hurt yourself. Just about all the characters have some kind of relationship issue. IE by squishing everyone into one mind it would be impossible to be hurt by anyone else because there is only “I”.

How? More or less by destroying everyone’s AT field. IE the bounders that define individuals. Think of it this way take two glasses of water then pour both into a bowl. There is no difference between the water that came from one cup or the other. There is only the water in the bowl.

You had to ask a tuff one

A long long time ago there was one being that split into to two other beings called Adam and Lilith.

The creatures called angels some way or another come from Adam. While humans come from Lilith.

Where did they find her? It’s never answered nor do i think it realy matters. (One important factoid is that Reis 1 2 and 3 hold Lilith’s soul. While kawouro (SP?) held Adams.)

Yes it was by shrinking Adam that second impact happened. No they never explain how that was done and i would say that this is another thing that real doesn’t matter.

Oh BTW Shinji is only 14

Also: It was implied (but never stated that I caught) that the reason that they had whiny disfunctional kids piloting the thingies is that only children born after the Impact could synch. Am I right, and if so, why is this?

Here’s a weird question - was Adam the most powerful angel? As in, if an Eva had gone hand to hand against him, would he have defeated them?

Lear, where did you find that out? Specifically the bit about Lilith and Adam being splits from the same crature, and Rei and Kaoru holding the souls (though I had gathered that Rei had Lilith’s, or else she wouldn’t have been able to “awaken” her).

What would actually have happened if an angel had come into contact with either Lilith or Adam?

Wow, you guys got so much more out of Evangelion than I did. I didn’t understand anything after episode 24 – except that a bunch of characters died, some stuff blew up, other wierd stuff happened, etc.

Union bylaws, mostly–the mecha pilotting unions have struck multiple times when people other than whiny kids drive the things.

Seriously, this is one of those bits that simply wasn’t explained. It’s been awhile since I watched Eva (and still haven’t seen the movie End Of), but I do recall that the reason Shinji was such bee’s knees with unit 01 (when he was able to get out of his own angst’s way) was that his mom had been absorbed into it years before. Which just adds a whole extra layer of creepy to the whole goings-on.

Actually, I was reading a theory somewhere that to pilot the Evas you had to be motherless - all of the Three Children are, and the person proposing the theory said (though I’m too not-owning-Eva to check it) that Toji, Kensuke[sic?] and the Class Rep all didn’t have mothers.

Anyway, I am of the mind that both Shinji’s and Asuka’s Evas contained the souls of their respective mothers. Remember in EoE when Asuka is at the bottom of the lake and says something to the effect of “Mama? You’re here? You’ve always been here! Protecting me with the AT field!” and then proceeds to kick ass (and get killed in a horrible scene… I was sad).

OP? Heck spoilers in whole thread!n But wait! They’re confusing, complicated, highly speculative spoilers! So no harm.

First of all, Speaker: yeah, that farewell kiss in EoE was touching in Eva’s usually disturbed way. Or else she was at the end of her rope as to WTH can she do to make him snap out of it

On the 2 mothers: You have it. Yui (Shinji’s mom) was fully and irreversibly absorbed by 01 (like almost happened to Shinji himself). Kyoko (Asuka’s mom) had part of her mind/soul/chi ripped into 02, what was left behind was a deranged shell of herself. Having permanently absorbed the life-force of a human apparently enables 01 to go into self-animated “berserker” mode – and in EoE, briefly 02 starts to go “berserker” but too late. (BTW one realization that hits Asuka in the end, upon contacting Kyoko’s spirit, is that it is the AT within her that lets her exist.)

00 was crewed by Rei (means both “zero” and “soul”) so all bets were off on that – Rei and Kaworu under the right conditions can generate external ATs and animate EVAs unaided. Which is why dummy-plugs duplicating their imprints could be used to control EVAs w/o need for a pilot, or even over his will.

As to the the suppossedly “special children”, there are hints dropped that MARDUK, the project that ostensibly identifies the special children is nothing but a shell set up to misdirect attention: that NERV simply, crudely and coldly placed in a convenient class at their disposal the children of people who had been expended in the project, knowing that the broken spiritual bonds could be later used as tools.

As to Adam/Lillith/Angels:
Apparently, SEELE’s prophecy for achieving HI required the capture and harnessing of Adam and Lillith, who in that universe we’re to assume were under the Antarctic ice cap for whatever reason. In doing so Adam was awakened, and his capture caused 2nd Impact, after which they apparently saved an Adam barely regenerating in an embryonic state. It seems that in order to achieve HI, they needed a controlled version of the Adam being, so from that Adam sample they then cloned the EVAs (Thus the mythology is satisfied: Adam and Lillith, equals, are separated, and Eva, subordinate, is created from the flesh of Adam).

It seems 3d Impact could be achieved in a variety of ways, and that NERV and SEELE, each for its reasons, had several back-up plans as to how to achieve it on their terms (e.g. Gendo wanted it to happen thru an Adam-Lillith union that he would control thru Rei so as to guarantee a conscious reunion of himself with Yui). However they all relied on Adam, or a version thereof such as the self-animated EVAs, being under their controlling power.

We’re to infer that SEELE’s scroll foretold that the Angels were coming to join Adam, and that if they did so before everything was ready, the eschaton would happen in the Angels’ terms, the humans would NOT be instrumental, get no part in the shaping of the new existence and maybe even just lights out. Thus NERV gets to interfere with the Angels. And creates an eleborate fiction that it is Adam down there (misdirecting both the Angels and SEELE); and any Angel entering there would be a fate worse than death (motivation for the people who were not to know the real truth to stand and fight).

It’s never really spelled out but it is made to look as if there were two schools of why HI was desired: one apparently favored by SEELE, as an opportunity to just ditch humanity and move on to a purified new plane as a brand-new life-form; and one apparently favored by Kouzou and the Ikaris in which all that was good and positive about all those who lived would be preserved and carried on into the new existence.

Were the Angels sentient?

Well, the last Angel, Kaworu/Tabris definatly was - he had no trouble faking being a human. As for the others, not enough info is available, as most of them were operating in “Giant Rampaging Monster” mode, and didn’t try to communicate with humans; one of them was smart enough to hack the computer systems though.

Further, isn’t Kaworu-as-Tabris referred in annotations as “the Angel of Free Will”? That would imply that the other “Angels” lack it or renounce it, and though they may have intelligence, in a few cases high intelligence, and a purpose, either it’s of a mechanistic, non-self-aware nature or they have totally surrendered their will to whatever cosmic fate drives them. Kaworu, OTOH choses to love Man (or at least A man) and sacrifice himself even.

“Angels” and Lillim (humans), in the Eva-verse(*), are kin to each other, different, competing ofshoots of the same creation.

(*Which is a very different one from the one we live in, to say the least)

JD, you reminded me of another thing I was confused about. Apparently all of the Angels were different “attempts” at creation. Were they all one attempt, or each seperate? If they were different, how in the world would they have reproduced?

Undetermined from the information available, Speaker. The successive creations is one of the 3rd-party theories available. Another theory is that everything in that universe is the product of a disruption of a primeval perfect unity, and that the life forces then coalesced in different disunited forms. The “angels” are so to speak “always there” and just manifest themselves when the tme is right.

Oh, that brings me to another questions - was the one angel in the volcano unique in being born on Earth? Or were all of them, and they just hid really well (considering they were mostly all over a hundred feet tall) before attacking?

Also undetermined from the information available. They just show up. In the end, since it turns out the true Final Battle will be fought within the collective psyche of humanity and specifically that of one extraordinarily messed up adolescent boy, a lot of these “objective facts” are moot so Anno did not bother filling them in.

There used to be on the 'net a bloody extensive ‘Eva FAQ’ that has since apparently become scattered among various fan sites. I encourage you to search them out. The other backstory canonical source, the “Red Cross Book”, was published only in Japan, in Japanese. (the Manga – comic – version also provides backstory but starting around ep 8 it diverges significantly from the anime’s storyline)

One theory, as mentioned, is they’re latent in the universe or on earth though not necessarily in our physical/temporal plane, until the time is right and they manifest. Remember, BTW, SEELE has in their hands a prophecy of exactly when and in what order the manifestations will happen: NERV’s finding of the angel in the volcano was neither an accident nor a feat of amazing detective work, it was a set-up.

Just so you know, JRDelirious, this has been immensely helpful. I was at one point a fan of this show until it just got ridiculous towards the end.
