“Do you think I’d like this series?”
No way I tell you this for sure of course. However I can say is that NGE is definitely not kids stuff and in fact some parts would be inappropriate for kids.
NGE is part political/religious conspiracy, part robot-fighting action and part teenage comedy/drama. IMO all three were well done though the poltical/religious plot wasn’t perhaps fully developed. I don’t know if this helps you decide. You might want to got to amazon.com and check the reviews.
SPOILERS
KK,
I don’t think the glasses mean that Rei was sleeping with Ikari though I am not sure if an alternative explanation is given. Asuka makes sense for “treating Shinji like dirt” ; the reason I didn’t get this was that I hadn’t reached the Asuka episodes when I read your comment so I tried to fit them to Misato/Rei/Ritsuki.
I just saw the entire series recently (picked up the box set at Otakon!).
The glasses that she has of Gendo’s are broken, if I recall. I don’t think that this is an indicator that he is in her apartment, but more that she feels for him as…well…dang it!
SPOILER!!!
…a half clone of Shinji’s mother/Gendo’s wife.
END SPOILER!!
Put me in the “liked the last 2 episodes” camp.
I loved the series, but I can see how some people wouldn’t…
[hijack] Did anyone else in here make it to Otakon? [/hijack]
Spanky (or anyone who has seen Death and Rebirth):
Is the movie worth watching? I might even buy it but I read that a lot of it was a recap of the serial.
I haven’t seen it personally, but I trust this website, Anime Jump!. They give it a “pass” unless you’re a completist, and recommend waiting for End of Evangelion.
A mostly unrelated question: is it ever revealed what exactly Shinji is listening to on his tape recorder? I could never tell if, during the long close-ups, it was playing something that we couldn’t hear, or it was letting us hear that it was just silence, that he was using to shut everything else out. I’m actually more curious to know what was going on there than to know about any of the “Third Impact” nonsense.
Recall that early in the TV series, we see how during an initial accident with her Eva, Gendo has to crack open the entry pod w. his bare hands to rescue Rei, burning his hands and breaking his glasses (this scene is reprised by his son at a later time). It was pretty clear to me that the glasses referred to a special bond, but nothing untoward.
On the other hand, when Rei II immolates herself and is reborn as Rei III, one of the first things she does is try to smash the glasses – as she starts becoming aware that Gendo’s agenda for her is not what should be.
Re: Shinji’s DAT-man – we’re left to mostly imagine the content of the tapes (Pachelbel’s Canon, 31 different versions of “Fly Me to the Moon”, the day’s school lessons? It can’t be motivational self-esteem tapes…) but the player’s displays – the indicator of the tape rewinding/fast forwarding, stopped, playing normally, the low battery warning, at how many minutes into the program it is – are often tied in with what’s supposed to go on in his mind or around him or the mood of the scene or what episode it is or some Anno insider reference. There’s one scene when he accidentally switches it to rewind as he has an anxious moment (one of a myriad), then just as it stops at 00:00:00 the mood gets broken.
Okay, that makes sense. The scene where Shinji entered Rei’s apartment was so slow, deliberate, and (relatively) ominous, I guess I was reading the worst into everything. And since Rei’s place was a studio, I think I remember the glasses being shown in short order after the bed and…well, I’m just a pervert, okay? :smack:
As SolGrundy said, you don’t have to get it unless you’re a completist. Death is a good summery of the TV series, with some new animation here and there (plus a few shots from the Japanese “special edition” edits of a few episodes), while Rebirth is a basically preview of the first 15 minutes of End of Evangelion (and the US version of D&R actually uses the first 15 minutes of EOE).
KKBattousai: Good that we were able to clear that up for you. I first thought that the “Gendo and Rei sleeping together” thing might have been possible, too. But then I thought about it, and realised that there was nothing that fully supported it.
