So, I’m pretty nerdy, and looking to travel to the Netherlands (and prolly take in some of France, Germany and Denmark as well). What are some things that I should see / do / visit while I am there?
For example:
Airbus factory in France - a definite go.
Large Hadron Collider (do they do tours? Not checked yet…)
My father, who is a civil engineer kind of geek, wants to see the Delta Works more than anything else. Are you a dams and bridges kind of nerd or a tech and research kind of nerd?
ETA, I guess you have to go now, simulpost.
When are you coming? The weather changes the answer to the question.
If you Like aeroplanes, you could check out the Aviodromein Lelystad Its mostly old timers and incredible flying machines
and there is the Nemo in Amsterdam, I think it’s more for kids, but it’s a beautiful building. The Amsterdam is docked next to it, if you are interested in history
Depending on your nerdy needs, you could visit the Maginot Line which is around 15km from the French Oil Museum (if memory serves, there’s also a neat little brewery close to the museum).
One place (or two places) that’s on my list is Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog, Dutch and Belgian towns that are mingled together with a couple of dozen enclaves. The borders run all over the place, cutting houses in two, with islands of each country inside the other. I love stuff like that.
twicks, who was coming into this thread to mention Teylers, which is cool as all hell. (pic, pic, pic, pic [there’s a separate wing that’s an art museum, oddly enough], pic.)
And on Sunday, all the Belgian residents stay home while all the Dutch from nearby Brabant (well, and often one American ;)) arrive to go shopping. Dutch shops are closed on Sunday.
