Nerdy Sport Team Names

The town of Roche, California could have teams called the Limits and the Lobes

Poca High School, West Virginia is the Poca Dots.

Not a scientist, but I immediately thought of a team called the LaGrange Points…

.

eta: Oops, missed kenobi’s post.

Ninja’d by a Jedi … whoa …

I once played for a law school softball team called the Ex Parte Animals.*

*I was a ringer, sort of.

It’s the old Jedi Mind Trick.

You know, don’t you, that Frank Ryan was once an assistant professor of math Rice and starting QB for the Houston Texans. He taught spring term only. He later quit to open a company to rate draft picks statistically.

There was once a well-regarded mathematician at Penn, later Penn State, named Nat Fine. My wife thought he should have created a baseball team of overweight players, called Nat Fine and his fat nine.

How about UC Santa Cruz’ Banana Slugs*?

I’ve seen T-shirts supporting the Banana Slugs appearing as a “nerd” prop in Pulp Fiction (“You guys look like a couple of dorks!”) and on a YouTuber with technical skills…I guess he was given this shirt by a fan.

*If you’ve ever hiked in the hilly woods near Santa Cruz you will see why they chose this mascot. The trails up in the San Juan Islands (WA state) are also littered with them.

Any question addressed to me regarding sports and starting out “you know, don’t you…?” is very very likely to be answered “No”.

Just like this one.

Not only did I not know that, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Frank Ryan.

I’ll wait over here while your head explodes.

Pedantic football nerd nit:

Ryan played college ball at Rice (in Houston), then played for the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins; his NFL career ran from 1958-70. The Houston Texans didn’t start play until 2002.

The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis varsity teams are the Eutectics. ESPN once declared their mascot to be the most esoteric in sports.
