I think nested quotes should be brought back, but only for posters who undergo a manditory two-day training session.
Not the squid again. I promise to do them right.

I’m disappointed, as I loved the nested quotes feature, but I understand your reasoning and appreciate your willingness to experiment with them. Thanks Xash!
They should be brought back seasonally - just like the Mc Rib (coming to a stained neck tie near you on 11/2)
Crap.
I really don’t see why people couldn’t use them properly. It’s not that damn hard.
Interesting possibility. I am using IE 7. I have looked for any settings for “select entire word” or “smart cursor” etc and cannot find anything like that. I am curious if it is browser specific or vB. Hmmm.
Even if browser specific, I still think it contributes to the problem. IE is a fairly common browser.
Note: it happens in both the edit window and when picking text out of a thread.
I think you may be right - I just tried a separate page and had similar behavior. Something not vB based, and still getting “smart” cursoring.
If the code were adjusted to simply put a space between the two flags, the problem would be solved.
Thank fucking god. I have no doubt that this happened because the moderators were getting sick and tired of being constantly asked to fix broken attributions. If you want something changed, make it annoying for the people in charge.
People have a five-minute window to edit their posts after they’re made. If they’re not noticing the gaping formatting errors after the initial post, why would they see them any better just because they’re forced to hit Preview before they post?
It wasn’t occasional. It was frequent.
Thank you for discontinuing those damned nested quotes.
And two weeks of Nested Quote camp.
“But why should I read my post after I post it? I’ve already read it when writing it up. Maybe. Kinda. Okay I sort of looked at the words as they came out of my fingers. And coding, hey, what’s a few coding errors among friends?”
What’s funny is that I usually preview my posts, I usually read them after I make them, and there’s *still *been at least one time where a quote tag fuckup made it through and I missed the edit window to fix it.
Glad to see the feature gone; when the attributions were badly borked right after the feature was turned on, I was in favor of letting people get used to it; as it turned out, they weren’t.
Heck, if you’re going to go that far, put entire linefeeds after them, so they are better separated out visually.

This explains a lot, actually. Ever since nested quotes were introduced, I’ve been wondering how anyone could make a mistake as blatant as deleting the wrong part of the quote. Start selecting at the beginning of the part you want to delete, select until the end of the part you want to delete, and then hit the delete key. Simple! It never even occurred to me that some browsers might be idiotic enough to force people to make that mistake.
That’s an argument for nested quotes, not against. The burden should be on the person modifying what they’re quoting. If I want to quote another user’s post exactly as it appears, I should be able to do that just by hitting the “quote” button. If I want to quote just a part of the post and not the whole thing, I should be doing extra work to get just that part. Someone who’s nesting quotes isn’t adding any content at all; they’re just leaving the content that’s already there in place.
Yup - that’d definitely work better, and would absolutely solve the issue.
For anyone who gets annoyed by the “Select Entire Word” feature of IE even beyond the now-moot nested quote issue, apparently there is no way to turn off the feature but there is a workaround.
The F7 key toggles “text select” mode on and off. With it on, you get an insertion point / caret that you can move around with the arrow keys. This allows selecting text via the keyboard, which I believe is an accessibility feature.
As a quick test, hit F7, click on some text, then use shift+arrow to select what you want. Then hit F7 again to end the test.
No, Chronos, quoting in itself is adding content to that post.
I realize I’m joining this discussion way too late, but I was really glad when nested quotes came back, and bummed that they’re gone. Too often, in debate threads, I’m replying to someone who’s replying in turn to someone else (maybe even me) - but his post makes no sense without the nested quote, so neither does my reply.
I never had any problem with editing out parts of nested quotes back when they were ‘the way things had always been.’
But I was reminded today of one additional problem with the removal of nested quotes: when you hit Reply, vBulletin doesn’t even put a line break between statements on either side of the now-absent quote. So you get stuff like this:
Turning into stuff like this:
See also what was mentioned previously - Democrats want to hike taxes with no corresponding spending cuts. Well, if you want to ask a question and then run away from the answer, I can’t see much difficulty.
It was impossible to tell, in the Reply box, that his comment to Dinsdale hadn’t been addressed to me. It was part of the same paragraph, after all.
I feel you, RT.
How you been, anyway?
