I think I’ve figured out the reason behind receiving so many cracked discs from Netflix. I think that some dishonest people will put a DVD in their que which they own and is broken. They will then keep the Netflix disc and send back the cracked one knowing that it won’t be checked. Am I right? I really like Netflix, but the number of cracked discs is getting annoying. I’ve noticed this tends to happen in expensive multi disc sets. In the first 4 seasons of Star Trek TNG, I’ve received 4 cracked discs.
I’ve been with them for a year and never had a cracked one. What does bug me with that almost none will run all the way without jumping unless I clean them first, even new ones.
I’ve only had 2 cracked (well, broken in half really) disks from Netflix. I’m pretty sure the breakage happens in transit as it’s very easy to tell, even inside the envelope, that they are broken.
I haven’t had any that were just cracked and I’ve never had any trouble playing any of their disks. Every one (of the intact ones) has played just fine right out of the envelope.
I believe someone here suggested (in another thread similar to this one) that one cause of the disk breakage may be having a small mailbox and the disks getting jammed in there by the letter carrier. I think that’s probably what happened in my case.
Also very cool is the report a bad disk feature on the Netflix website. Have a bad disk? Tell them on the site and they’ll ship out another one right away.
I got a cracked disc in my very first order from Netflix a few months ago (and yes, it was from a multi-disc set) but since then they’ve all been fine, and I’m on the four-at-a-time plan.
I’ve been with Netflix for almost 3 years, and have only ever received one cracked disc. Maybe the problem is with how your mail gets handled…?
I’ve been a heavy Netflix user for four years and have only had one cracked disc. I’ve also had one incorrect disc (wrong number in a series) and two that never showed up. All in all a pretty good record since I must have rented over 500 discs by now.
We’ve only had one that was really badly scratched up, and no cracked discs. Mostly they play just fine. Overall we’ve been really happy.
I’ve received about six or seven cracked discs, including one that was clearly broken in transit (the envelope had a tire track across it.) Actually I’m surprised so many discs arrive okay, considering they’re sent through the rough & tumble mail system with virtually NO protection at all!

My biggest beef with Netflix right now is that all of a sudden, literally overnight, a good 10% of my queue has gone from “Available Now” to “Short Wait” or longer. I used to hear complaints from people who had so many movies waitlisted, that Netflix would always ship #40 & #41 from their queue. I’m not quite to that level yet, but it’s getting there!
Also, it seems like they’re not even bothering to stock certain new releases right away. I know that certain “cult” films and music DVDs tend to get waitlisted for a long time due to demand, but that’s never been a problem with stuff like forgotten 80’s teenage comedies…until now. I waited six weeks for Dutch, and I’m still waiting on License to Drive, which was released over a month ago. Is there some super-secret, underground Corey & Corey fan club that I’m not aware of?!?!?!

I just joined and received my first two discs, both okay. I noticed that the address that the DVDs get returned to is a P.O. box in the same town in which I live. Is this common, or do I live in a town that has a Netflix distribution center right here? I assumed all the discs came and went to and from California. I’m in North Carolina.
They have distribution centers all over the U.S.
I’ve only had a couple unplayable discs but I’ve noticed the most scratched-up ones seem to be the movies that appeal to less sophisticated tastes.
