+1 for CashBack. I would never have added this to my regular queue but thoroughly enjoyed watching it on instant.
Haven’t tried anything foreign with the streaming, but have had that problem with foreign DVDs. Is that what you’ve got? It’s annoying because a lot of my queue is actually foreign films (I can find last year’s blockbuster in the Redbox, but where can I find O’Horten? You can’t even torrent that). I’ve thought until now it was a problem with my TV, possibly ghosts.
Also of note is that this movie has the theatrical subtitles on View it Now, not the awful original DVD subtitles.
Harold
Big Man Japan
I really wanted to - but the dubbing is terrible! Really, really bad. I much prefer subtitles, and Watch Now doesn’t have them.
I just watched this tonight and loved it! For those who don’t know, it’s about the guys who tried to break the world record on Donkey Kong, the old-school arcade version. I know there are a lot of gamers on the Dope, and it’s a really well-done movie.
The Visitor
Pink Panther cartoons
Kama-Sutra
Weeds (at least the first couple seasons)
Various “Best Of ______” from SNL
Various standup comedy routines
I’ve never had that problem with DVD’s, just streaming from a Roku to a TV. I took a look at my picture settings and found that I had my picture mode set to 16:9 instead of what I thought it was set at, which is a scanning mode which selects the best mode automatically. Once I changed it to the scanning mode, it shrunk the picture a bit so I can now see more of the subtitles at the bottom. It didn’t completely solve the problem, but it’s better. And it leads me to believe that Netflix is sending the whole picture, including the subtitles, but my TV isn’t formating it correctly.
What sort of TV are you having the DVD problem with? If it’s a widescreen, do you have it set to a stretch format? The problem could also be your DVD player. Is it set to a 4:3 output for a 16:9/widescreen TV? If it’s a 4:3 TV, is the DVD output set at 16:9? That setting could effect how you’re seeing the film on your TV.
Back on topic…
London to Brighton. It was quite similar to one I already mentioned - Gloria. I watched it last night and was really impressed.
I don’t know if it’s “must-see” per se, but I just watched the documentary “Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father”. I went into it without really knowing anything about it and it was like a sucker punch to the gut. Watch it if you want to feel really, really sad and angry.
The Big Lewbowski
Heavy Metal (saw bits and pieces of this over the years, still haven’t watched the whole thing.)
I have been watching these of late.I was surprised that a few of them I had not seen before on PBS.
They just added a bunch of Criterion Collection titles, which are the Bergman and Kurosawa ones people have mentioned. For me, Ikiru is the must-see Kurosawa, and it’s up there.
