What's in your Netflix queue?

I just got it and I don’t know what took me so long. We are the type of family that would pay 20$ in late fees and never actually watch the movie. Our queue relfects how different the four of us are in our tastes.

I actually own both Reservoir Dogs and The Big Lebowski on DVD… they’re among the movies I can watch over and over again and never get bored of 'em, a rather short list as it turns out.

I find Netflix is a perfect way to ‘test’ movies… I can get it sent to me, watch it, see if I like it. Don’t pay big bucks at the theater, don’t buy a disk that I don’t like. (With a few exceptions, but that’s fodder for another thread)

Currently in my mailbox, gonna go get 'em here in a bit:

Like the OP I can’t believe it took me so long to sign up for this. No late fees, convenient door to door delivery, and so far I’ve had no problem playing the DVD’s although the drive on my computer can be very tempermental about any scratches.

I’m almost embarassed to show how thin my queue is:

Lonsome Dove
The Passion of Christ
Donnie Darko

But I wanted to warn Big Girl about Bad Lieutenant. Don’t! It’s absolutely terrible. Watch Reservoir Dogs twice instead-- you’ll want to anyway.

I have 166 movies in my Netflix queue. These are the top 15:

  1. Father (Father: Diary of One Week) (Russia)
  2. Hiroshima Mon Amour (France)
  3. Little Murders (USA)
  4. Operation Thunderbolt: Disc 1 (Israel)
  5. Operation Thunderbolt: Disc 2

  12. Dangerous Moves (Switzerland)
  13. Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan (UK)

I can’t list them all for reasons which will become apparent, but here’s a few:

The mysteries are my girlfriend’s doing (though I enjoy the Inspector Lynley series as well), as is the Inuyasha. I think I’ll go fatten the queue with a few more choices of my own …

I’ve seen Bad Lieutenant. I saw it in the movies, in fact. My son has been dying to see it and I kept telling him “No. He’s just too bad. Bad, bad lieutenant.”

Now he’s seventeen.

I liked Bad Lieutenant. Well, the parts I watched when I wasn’t closing my eyes and cringing.

I only signed up a couple of months ago but I’ve already watched more movies, etc than in the last ten years. It’s a lot of fun.

Explain Netflix to me. I think I understand the basic premis - you pay amonthly fee and they send you up to 3 DVDs you can watch and return. When you return those, you get three more. But can you designate which you want to see when? I mean, what if you really want to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and that’s number 25 on your list? Or you’re in the mood for action/adventure and the next three movies on your list are romantic comedies?

How long is the turn around once you send the movies back?

I usually just buy movies used at Hollywood video.

StG

You get a queue of the movies you want to see. You can re-arrange your queue at any time, putting whatever you want to see at #1. Of course, if a movie is already being mailed to you, you can’t change that, but it only takes a day for them to arrive. You don’t have to rent them in blocks of three, three is just the max you can have out. (They offer more expensive packages where you can have up to 8 movies out, and a budget package with only two movies and a limited number of rentals a month.) Of course, getting the movies theoretically depends on availability, but I’ve never had this problem. (In other words, all the movies I’ve wanted have been available when they were at the top of my queue.) In the situation you describe, you would simply move seven brides to the top of you list, and that would be the next flick shipped out to you. Or you could move your three romantic comedies up top, if that’s what you wanted. For me its a three day turnaround. Usually I’ve got one movie at home, sometimes two.

I rarely buy DVD’s because I’ve got enough damn clutter with my books and music, and there are few movies I’m going to see over and over. Of course alot of people do buy movies and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

This week I sent back five discs which they received all at once, but only sent out two that day. The other three didn’t ship til the next day, for no apparent reason (no wait list or anything.) What the hell? First time the bozos ever did that…

Thanks for reminding me about Croupier! It’s one that is constantly being recommended to me and I keep forgetting to put it in the queue.

Have you seen Kwaidan before? I bought it based on the description alone (I wasn’t a member of Netflix at the time). I don’t think it’s a great movie, but it’s mesmerizing. Unfortunately, none of the people I’ve recommended it to have called it “mesmerizing” but instead “painfully dull” and given up. If you get bored with it, I highly recommend you skip ahead to the last story in the set. It’s really cool.

Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. Generally unless a movie is a total waste i’ll see it through. I like Asian fantasy so I should be OK with it. I just saw Tsui Hark’s Green Snake which I really liked despite some cheesy parts, and Ugetsu is one of my favorite movies, so I’m looking forward to Kwaidan.

BTW, Faraway, so close is OK, but don’t expect it to be nearly as good as Wings of desire, which is Wim Wenders best movie, IMHO.

I have 142 titles in my queue, 21 of which have not yet been released.

What I’m getting this week:

[ul]
[li]The X-Files: Season 3: Bonus Disc[/li][li]The X-Files: Season 3: Disc 6[/li][li]The Station Agent[/li][/ul]
The first 20 in my queue:
[ul]
[li]Brainstorm[/li][li]Bad Santa[/li][li]Japanese Story[/li][li]Secret Window[/li][li]The Human Stain[/li][li]The Big Bounce[/li][li]Starsky & Hutch[/li][li]The Dreamers[/li][li]Hellboy[/li][li]The Whole Ten Yards[/li][li]The Prince and Me[/li][li]Taking Lives[/li][li]Godsend[/li][li]GoodFellas: Special Edition[/li][li]Barbershop 2: Back in Business[/li][li]New Jack City[/li][li]Laws of Attraction[/li][li]Twisted[/li][li]The Ladykillers[/li][li]The Punisher[/li][/ul]
Like KGS, I’m constantly moving stuff up to the top (messing with the queue a lot, in general), so some of the stuff toward the bottom could conceiveably never get shipped.
