I would gladly pay a little more for more movies (But not at the expense of the current catalogue!)
Boyo Jim, what do you use to watch Netflix? I’ve never seen much of that behavior, I watch on Tivo HD and Roku mostly, but also have it on PS3.
You can’t go to Netflix hoping to watch something in particular, you have to just browse around. The Tivo client doesn’t browse at all, which sucks. The Roku client is ok but only shows a certain number of videos in each category. 50 or 100 don’t cut it, that’s just barely scratching the surface.
If I go on Netflix.com and start browsing I find there is tons of stuff to add to my Instant Watch Queue. One video leads to another and an hour is gone before I know it.
What behavior?
I watch on my laptop PC.
I can get streaming Netflix through my TV, but prefer to do all of my searching through my PC. Among other things, I can use a real keyboard with the PC rather than having to point and click one letter at a time on the TV.
But I would also love to know how to get those email alerts. I think the only emails I ever get from Netflix are the “We’ve received . . . .” to let me know that a DVD I’ve returned got to them, and "We’ve shipped . . . " to let me know what’s in the mail. I’ve never received any emails about the availability of anything in streaming, and I’d love that.
I’ve got to agree that the recommendations need to start excluding movies I’ve already watched through Netflix, movies I’ve already rated (which most people would realize means I’ve already watched them somewhere), and movies I’ve indicated I’m not interested.
I’ll add one personal wish to the list – if a movie or TV series is not available at all, don’t allow me to Save it to my queue without at least telling me that the availability may be NEVER.
I can’t open Netflix at work right now, but I could swear there’s a “Recommend unrated movies only” option somewhere in my account settings.
I agree with this. Although I will say: have you heard of http://instantwatcher.com/ ? It vastly improves the Netflix streaming browsing experience.
I appreciate the suggestion, and I took some time to browse though all the account settings, and I didn’t see this choice. If you do see it again, please post some directions about how to find it.
But I did see some other things that might be useful to some of the folks who’ve posted here.
Emails:
There is an email “newsletter” which you can get that has alerts about new releases, but it doesn’t say anything to suggest these alerts have any connection to your queue. Presumably your alerts would include new releases from your queue, but also others.
Tiers:
There is in fact another streaming tier. But if you’re paying $7.99 a month, you’re in the higher tier. There is a $4.99/month tier which limits you to 2 hours streaming a month, and gives you fewer program choices.
Is this for the mail service? I have streaming only, and if a movie or tv show isn’t available, it isn’t visible to me at all, so I can’t put it in my queue.
And just as an aside, if something isn’t available, there’s a good chance Netflix has very little idea of whether it will be available in the future or not.
I was thrilled… thrilled when they added “Netflix Just for Kids” - but thoroughly bummed when I realized it doesn’t unhook the kids’ stuff from your regular profile - What happens in"Just for Kids" still affects what is presented to you in regular Netflix.
No, I still have to wade through “Because you watched Pinky Dinky Doo…” suggestions, etc. when I’m trying to find something to watch with the wife.
Hey, can anybody solve this problem I just ran into.
I had more than 150 items in my queue. I just picked a movie from it and watched it, and now my queue is totally empty.
Is there some button I could have pushed accidentally to empty my queue? The only way I know how to delete items is one at a time, line by line, and I certainly didn’t do that.
And, in case you’re wondering, I’m still logged in, and in my own account.
Holy shit. I logged in just to see if anything was up, and mine’s empty too. This better be a glitch!
Aaaand, it’s back. Try logging out and in again.
I’m actually somewhat relieved to hear that – it probably means some system problem, and not a catastrophe of my own making.
Lets hope they have a decent backup and recovery procedure.
Whoo! I didn’t even have to log out – the queue is full again.
Just moments ago, Netflix updated its category system to include “sub-categories”. I don’t know if it includes ALL of them. But if you pick a major category from the list, at the top of the page that opens will be a drop-down menu of subcategories to choose from. You also have more options on how to sort the list.
