Netflix TV series recommendations

They completed two seasons out of what the creator intended to be either five or six. A fairly major story arc ended at the end of the second season, but you’re definitely left hanging. The final disc does have a lot of addl. info about where the story was going.

Overall, it was a good watching experience – very evocative. (And if you do watch it, you’ll get curious about the Dust Bowl, in which case I’ll recommend this book, which someone here recommended when I had some questions about why the Dust Bowl happened and whether it could happen again.)

If the fact that the story doesn’t completely resolve will drive you batshit, don’t start – but if you’re happy to watch some really well done story-telling that evokes a time and place (and group of people) that you don’t always encounter – go for it, it’s really well done.

(And, BTW, I’m speaking as someone who doesn’t usually enjoy supernatural or horror as genres.)

I vote NO and consider HBO’s actions on that series to be indefensible! The series was weird and took unexpected turns and had really bizarre characters and situations, but it was damn fine drama. That’s about the point where HBO began to suck enough that we almost dropped the channel from our list. We still have it, but it’s not one we would start carrying.

Showtime’s series Weeds and Dexter have made us consider subscribing, but we see it easier just to wait a year and watch the Netflix. We saw Dexter’s first season on CBS! Cocksuckers bleeped all the good stuff. Netflix is the way to travel. Next best option is watching the replays online, if you have a screen big enough to see what’s happening in the background.

I am always, always, always enthusiastically recommending Six Feet Under. An amazing series. Better than therapy.

I’m going to third Spaced. I really, really liked it.

Also liked Black Books, which is another British sitcom, except it has a rather annoying laugh track. But if you can get over it it’s misanthropic and pretty funny.

I also just watched the first season of Peep Show, which I don’t know if I liked or not.

Seconded. Great dialogue, very silly, in a wonderfully twisted setting.

It’s too bad that the ratings never recovered after the writer’s strike; I really felt like they were hitting their stride with the development of the characters in the second season. My understanding is that there’s three or so unaired episodes still in the can; I hope they release season 2 on DVD with them included.

If you like British comedy, and a lot has been suggested, Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister are some of the most wonderfully amusing things ever to have been produced for TV.

It helps if you have some interest in politics, but I think they are accessible anyway.
