Very nice series, especially the episodes with Jaskier and Geralt. The chemistry between Yennefer and Geralt is just not there.
My wifes main concern is the actress of Yennefer - she just doesn’t buy the jaded, ancient witch in a Young Body. Just dropping that you spent 30 years as a kings advisor doesn’t work.
My gripe is that I do not care one bit about the war, because I have no idea about the implications, scale or anyone involved in it. This goes back to Ciri being the only Person directly impacted and interested in the conflict. Both Yennefer and Geralt don’t give a flying Roach about it, and this leads to me not caring either.
So, Nilfgaardians are ill-defined religious fanatics. So what? Everybody else seems to be just as bad, so why should I care about this conflict?
Watched this over the last few days. Overall I give it a big “meh”.
After the 1st episode, i was ready to walk away.
15 minutes into the 2nd episode, I felt reassured my first instinct after episode 1 was correct but I finished the episode.
At this point I asked for opinions from friends via social media and the overwhelming response was either a.) it gets better around episode 4 and is worth it or b.) it gets better around episode 4 but it still is not very good.
Episodes 4-6 got more interesting and kept me going. The song during the credits of I think episode 5 or 6… almost made me walk away again. Norweigian death metal goth guy sings a weird ren-faire song about time of the axe is nigh… yeah, nope. Definitely not a “Rains of Castemere” effort there.
I pushed through to the conclusion with episode 8 and yes, it got better but I’m solidly in the camp that it is still not very good overall.
I do second turning on closed captions for some of the dialog. The unintended side effect is it becomes even more apparent that 50% of Geralts dialog is “hmmm”, “hmm”, “hm”, or a sigh.
I’d say the quality is just good enough that “I love this show” is a sustainable argument :). Heck I know plenty of people who loved Highlander( the show ) and I never could get into it. And I loved Carnivale on HBO, when it seemed most other people did not.
Critical response has been mixed, even leaning mildly negative. But viewer response has been rather more positive. So I think you can still hold your head high and not worry about early onset dementia. Over this ;).
I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say they’re really, really not what they seem.
Meanwhile, it’s made pretty clear that the Northern kingdoms were founded on the brutal genocide of the native non-human population. Hard to top that or really feel much antipathy for Nilfgaard after it’s revealed.
Yeah, well we’ll just see what I’m saying after I watch the rest of the season. I mean, Heroes looked like a good show at one point and I was as burned as everyone else on that disaster.
If it is as good as Legend of the Seeker, I’ll be happy. Seeker was by no means perfect, but it was nice to have a fantasy show on TV.
I think most people watching it enjoyed it. But I can easily see where people who didn’t like it are coming from, though. It’s in a weird place where I very much liked it but feel zero need to defend it to people who didn’t.
Not bad overall but I think the show would have been far more interesting if it focused primarily on Yennefer.
Everything looked greasy…the people, the places, the animals…everything looked like it could use a bath and a fresh tetanus shot. This is a TV show about monsters and witches and stuff. A little anachronism wouldn’t have hurt anyone.
Yennefer has to be the most bad ass hunch back to ever hunch back! And I’m glad they finally allowed her character to bathe regularly after she had her magical make over.
What was the point of the bard? Exposition?
I really hated princess bad actress, blonde hair, creepy eyes and her whole damn family. Add to that the fact that she has the power of SCREECH and I really, REALLY wanted that girl to be removed from the story asap.
[Stupid Queen Grandma] Sorry princess bad actress creepy eyes but you’re not going to get what you want
[Princess Bad Actress Creepy Eyes] SCREEEEEEEEEEECH…<takes deep breath>……SCREEEEEEEEEECH
Seriously, how many people were injured or died because the stupid little princess kept making dumb decisions? I literally stood and cheered when black elf boy told her to fuck off and left her dumbass looking stupid in the middle of the woods.
Exactly how many princesses are there in whatever land the Witcher inhabits? Seemed like every separate adventure involved at least 1 princess who needed saving. Yennefer quickly became my favorite character because (after she left school) she was constantly kicking ass and never needed to be saved…well ok, there was that one time with the Djinn.
I did enjoy the fact that the show doesn’t hold your hand and walk you through the story. If you don’t pay attention and make a number of necessary intuitive leaps then you are just going to be lost.
I’m almost all the way through and I am enjoying it. I did start to read the books and it seems that the show is very faithful to at least the beginning of the story.
You’ve got to consider the time period/culture they’re emulating. These “kingdoms” were tiny, and someplace the size of the US would likely have hundreds or more. You’d encounter a new royal family every couple of days of riding, I’d think.
I’ve been playing through the Witcher 3 game, and in order to match the game, they’d have to have a three hour episode that you are forced to watch, in order to receive 75XP.
True, but for all effects and purposes they were all independent realms, especially following the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which formalized their absolute sovereignty.
I’ve seen all but the final episode and have very much enjoyed it. I can not wait for season 2, though they should push to get it on the air by the end of 2020, not wait until 2021.
