I read in the NY Times tody that there is a “deeply buried” preference in Netscape for “Open unrequested windows.” The article says that you can turn this Off to suppress pop-up ads. I looked all over and ccannot find this setting. Does anyne know where it is? (I hae Netscape 6.2). Thanks!
Turn off javascript.
OK thanks! Does turning it off have any adverse effects?
Yeah, you won’t be able to load pages that have java.
There are third party programs that keep things from coming up. Search download.com for
‘pop-up’
Also, What version Netscape is this?
There are also lovely new things called pop-unders, which come up underneath & you don’t know where
they came from.
It’s Netscape 6.2. I’ve heard of third party programs, but this article I just read claimed that “the most recent” Netscape has a property for “open unrequested windows.” The most recent Netscape is 6.2, there’s a 7 beta, but I looked at the Netscape website and it doesn’t say anything about “open unrequested windows” in 7.
I guess I may just fool around with the third party programs…
I’m using the Netscape 7 Preview Release. I didn’t find exactly what you’re looking for, but there is an option to disallow JavaScript from opening new windows entirely. I imagine that this will prevent pop-ups However, for instance, in my mail program, when you click on Compose New Message, it opens a pop-up window to type your message in. I think that the option would disable that too.
You need Mozilla, Netscape’s open source incarnation, to see the actual checkbox.
Go to Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Scripts & Plugins
and uncheck Open unrequested windows.
That checkbox has been removed from Netscape 7. You can still set it manually by editing either user.js or prefs.js in your profile folder (not sure where that goes in windows, but it should be .netscape under unix) and adding the following line:
user_pref(“dom.disable_open_during_load”, true);
Oops, I got javascript & java mixed up.
Use Opera.
No need for third-party addins.
You can disable/enable pop-ups with ease.
Opera disables all pop-ups. Mozilla/Netscape allows you to disable only unrequested ones.
Thanks buckgully! That worked for me!
I installed Netscape 7 because I hoped it would have this feature as an option.
In Windows 2000,** prefs.js** is the file and it’s located in:
C:\Documents and Settings*<your login name>*\Application Data\Mozilla\profile
Yay, thanks buckgully and Corbomite! I edited liprefs.js and prefs.js, and opened and closed Netscape a few times, and it seems to be working great now!
I’m glad this works, because I tried Pop-Up Stopper yesterday, and I couldn’t open my email window!
