Netscape's fat.db file

What is its purpose in life? I opened it with WordPad and I see a list of files downloaded, web sites visted in and amongst all of the computerese. Can it be deleted and will it auto-create another like the *.hst file does? I regularly edit my cookies.txt file and delete the listings there. I don’t mind having to re-type my IDs and passwords as I re-vist web sites.

I know, I know as long as I am on the web, my privacy is pretty much non-exsistent but, in doing this I feel like I am at least not standing beside the information super-highway with my pants down around my ankles saying, “SCREW ME!”

No cracks about Netscape vs. IE, please. I try to give Mr. Gates as little of my business as possible. Nor do I wish to have to worry about all of IE’s security flaws.

Thank you very nice!

It’s the information for finding things in your cache - you’ll note that it’s in the same directory as the cache together with funny named files corresponding to cached pages and graphics. If you clear the disk cache, you will note that all the info in it goes away. Yes, you may remove it. If you do, remove the other stuff in the cache directory, too, since the browser will no longer have a record of those items.

The URL “about:cache” will decode it for you, BTW.

As I fear -

Beware! IE users! BEWARE!

I input fat.db in the special spiffy search box at snap.com & there are a lot of web sites that explain it for ya. e.g.
