Mira has been found to have a long tail that glows only in the ultraviolet. There’s talk of studying along the length of the tail to explore the star’s past.

The tail includes carbon and oxygen, so the articles talk about it seeding future planets.

Are there extra-solar planets?

It sounds to me like there’s a good chance that some of the matter in that 13-light-year-long trail behind Mira will ultimately coalesce into solid matter, and in planet-sized chunks, to boot.

So… this suggests to me that it wouldn’t be all that weird to imagine that there are a fair number of extra-solar planet-sized masses floating about out there.
