New ad series starts Monday, 4/4/16

Sure, and I agree with you entirely. I was just being naff. Apologies if I caused offense.

You are one of life’s true champions

Which is the reason people use ad blockers.

Still happening today for logged-in users. Liars.

Yup. I just clicked on a tab I left open on my browser, clicked “user CP”, and clicked on the link to this thread. The browser opened a new tab and loaded this content into the new tab. Then it over-wrote the old tab with an ad for “been verified”. As it did that, it switched me to this tab. I was definitely logged in – the user CP worked, bringing me to my subscribed threads. Pretty annoying.

chrome Version 49.0.2623.100 m
Windows 7

Clicked on my SDMB link at work today, and got a “Popular Science TV” popover that started playing a loud video without my touching anything. Not appreciated.
edited to add: IE 11.

Logged in on my phone and have been getting been verified amd other ads.

Hi all- just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that Ed is following this thread and tech problems are being reported up the food chain. Thanks for everyone’s patience as the bugs get worked out and for reporting issues as they come up.

If you do have issues, please let us know what browser you are using. Thanks.

We think the problems we’re seeing are browser and/or advertiser specific. I was seeing a gross Probiotic America popOVER yesterday with MSIE 11. We killed that ad and I’m not seeing it now. Instead I get a BeenVerified popUNDER. This is beneath the SDMB window and to one side, so I see about half of it. This is normal.

Please note:

  1. To see ads only once per day, your browser must accept cookies. If it’s set not to accept cookies or your browsing history is flushed frequently, we don’t know you’ve seen the ad already and you’ll get it again.

  2. I don’t know what effect if any AdBlocker has on popunders.

  3. If you’re experiencing difficulties:

a. Please understand the difference between normal and bad behavior. If the ad appears OVER the SDMB screen or you’re taken to a page other than the one you were trying to get to, that’s bad - pls report per below. If the ad opens in a new window UNDER your current window, that’s normal.

b. If you’re getting a bad ad, please report it in this thread, including the following info: (i) what exactly happened; (ii) browser, version #, OS; (iii) advertiser name; (iv) the URL of the offending ad.

Thanks and we apologize for any inconvenience.

From what I can see the BeenVerified page loads first so you may see it flash for a moment, then your intended page loads on top of that. This is normal. If the BeenVerified ad were to remain the top window, that would be bad behavior, but unless I’m misunderstanding you that’s not what’s happening. Conceivably if your system is loading pages slowly due to local issues the popunder may be fully visible for a short time, but at the end of the process your intended window should be on top with no extra effort on your part.

Sounds like a bad ad. I’ll have this one stopped. Sorry.

ETA: this ad has been blocked. Pls advise if it appears again. Thanks.

Just the ad please. The show itself isn’t too bad.

I got the ad even tho I am a paid member and was signed in.

We’ve had a number of reports of this. I’m trying to establish how the ad server is supposed to know you’re a logged-in user, which should give us some insight into why it doesn’t.

ETA: John our tech guy tweaked the code. Let me know if the problem persists.

I’m getting this a lot all of a sudden as well.

I’m also getting multiple copies of the same page loaded into my history so when I hit the back button I return to where I already am. It seems that the longer I stay in a thread the more my history shows it so my back button is essentially useless.

Chrome… Windows 10.

I did not need to do anything extra, but I was logged in, and it was slow enough to be unpleasant and disquieting. My understanding was that we weren’t supposed to get popunders when logged in. Did I get that wrong?

also, I think your sponsor should very seriously consider whether this is a good idea, or whether it will drive users, and more importantly, potential users away from the site. But I understand that’s not the point of this thread.

As I say, we tweaked the code so you should stop seeing the ad if you’re logged in. Let me know if this problem persists.

Okay. I’ll check again on Monday. Thanks.

No offense taken. No worries we’re good. It’s just that I tend to joke around a lot so some people don’t take me seriosuly, which most times you shouldn’t, but I am being serious about what is happening with the ads. I’m not making up what is happening just to poke at Ed or the mods. Never had anything like these instances happen until this week. I’m not mad but yesterday was annoying.

And another data point. I was on and off the Dope all day both at work and at home and haven’t seen one ad.

Ed, as always, thank you for what you do.

He arises from his lair 400 feet beneath an off-ramp on the Ryan without warning, because the need to feed on a succulent young Ignorant is overpowering.

When he’s gorged on the dim, the witless, the lazy and the Oxford Comma Lovers, , he folds his leviathan self down into a small packet the size of an AOL installation disk from 1995 and slips effortlessly back under his off-ramp.
