New Amsterdam; premiere (spoilers)

Anybody else watch this? It looks promising. I hope we see alot of flashbacks as to what John’s been up to over the last 400 years. Particularly how he deals with creating a new identity every couple decades. I did notice one, major, plot hole in the pilot. John was stripped at the hospital, yet they have no idea who he was. Did no one bother to look as his badge or in his wallet? :dubious:

It looks as if in the Thursday episode he’s been identified by the doctor.

I liked the show, the dry humor. I wonder why Omar knows his secret. And do you suppose the dog, 36, is his 36th dog or something like that?

I felt sorry for that old lady who remembered him, in the midst of her dementia.

I’m really looking forward to the next episode, I have high hopes for this show.

Could be, of course that would mean he’s gone through 609 girlfriends, but only 35 dogs. Which brings up another issue that probally won’t be explored since this is an American show. Were they all actually girlfriends? Four centuries looking for a soul mate; who wouldn’t try outside their prefered gender?

He goes around giving people honest answers, and Omar has been around him long enough/pays more attention, so he knows what’s going on. I think you’re right about the dog.

And I think I’ll watch this when I can.

That just means it’s harder to get over losing your dog.

I kind of like the search for the “one”. It reminds me of the Mike Hammer series with the “face”.
I’m thinking he will alway miss her by a bit.

Oh, shoot. I missed it. Does anyone know if it’s being rebroadcast?

Did anyone else think that it was Journeyman redux? Emotionally conflicted hero with temporal issues. Solve one case each episode and deal a bit with the time problem. I liked Kevin McKidd much better, though.

Sunday night, I think.

No, there were no similarities whatsoever between the shows.

Also: what kind of bastard would dump his dog? You get a dog, you keep it. They’re not going to have him run into “35”, I hope. I also thought the crime story was a little meh, but the character is interesting.

I was struck by how a handlebar mustache and long hair can make a guy go from sexy straight to almost-homeless looking.

I liked the show and, unlike someone in the other thread I started about this show, enjoy the romance aspect.

Also, why does he want to grow old and die? He seems to be enjoying is immortality.

Well, over 400 years he’s had 36 dogs, averaging 11 years each. Depending on the breed, health and activities of the dogs as well as his travels remember he mentioned being at Normandy it’s not unreasonable for him to have had that many dogs. The fact that he’s owned all those dogs i think is a good sign of character. He is looking for companionship in any way he can.

I’m not sure what to make of it yet. I hope we’ve had our quota of gratuitous shots of his naked torso. We get it already. He stays in good shape.

Nope. No where NEAR enough shots of his naked torso. I think there should be more gratuitous shots of his nakedness even beyond his torso. But that’s just me.
Meant to add-- also more time lapse shots of NYC. Love that.

I must have missed the reference blackboxed by Slypork. When did he say that?

I thought it was OK, overall; I’d give it a B. The dialogue when he meets his spunky Latina partner at the crime scene was so cliched my ears bled.

He does seem to give people straight answers about experiences from long ago - early baseball, staying on the wagon since 1965, etc. Wonder why he’s so loose about that? Funny that his buddy earns some extra cash from selling “antiques” he made yesterday.

He said he had one son who died at age 6 (and who might be featured in tomorrow night’s episode, from the looks of the preview). How many other kids might he have had over the years? He’s gonna have to be careful in his dating - who knows how many 38-great-granddaughters he’s got out there?

The passing references to earlier “lives” were interesting - I liked all the pictures he’s taken of Times Square (but how did he know, back in 1827 or whatever, that that particular corner would or might be significant by 2007?) Hope there will be more extended sequences set in the past - the British occupation of NYC during the Revolution, the 1863 Draft Riots or the construction of Central Park would all be interesting.

Guess I’ll tune in again.

When he was reading the lips of the kid with his father he mentioned being too close to an exploding shell on Normandy Beach which made him temporarily deaf.

I like how he is always giving honest answers and everyone just thinks he’s a smartass. Like when he says at the AA meeting that he had been sober for over 15000 days which meant that he stopped drinking in 1965. Nobody expects what he says to be the truth.

Or like when he says he used to go to Chumley’s when it was a speakeasy during Prohibition. He does it so often I don’t think people even notice. Except Omar, apparently.

It was pretty good. It seems like he’s been hanging around Omar for awhile, so he probably put two and two together when he kept getting older and John didn’t.

I didn’t like his partner, and hope she’ll get her narcotics transfer (of course it’s not going to happen).

I missed the part about him having a kid. Could be interesting.

Indeed. Myself, I think the storyline would be much advanced by a couple of shots of his naked ass. Per episode.

I wonder that he hasn’t lost more of his accent in 400 years, though.

Not that I’m complaining.
